To me it sounds like slicks and a 7.5 rear end will be getting you some business!!

As a general rule...

... No they won't last a lifetime, ESPECIALLY with an M-6.
BUT... with a M6, what is gonna go FIRST in a high traction situation?

Clutch
U-joints
Driveshaft
Pinion teeth
Ring gear teeth
Spider gears
Posi carrier
??????????????

Youz pick your transmission and youz take your chances, simple as that!

Now I still have my original 7-5/8 rearened in my car, heres what I have went on it:

11.13 @ 121.94 on a one time 150 N2O, EASY test run.
11.5X's NUMEROUS times on a 75 shot
1.485 sixty foot time
7.26 1/8 mile

Now the KEY... heres what I've done to the rearend:

MOSER axles.
GM Motive R&P gears 4.10
A4 trans W/ 4140 rpm stall converter.
T/A Rear cover.
Axle tubes welded to pumpkin.
OPEN carrier with welded spider gears (Poormans spool)
NEW bearings EVERY gear change.
Tight teeth clearences.
Royal Purple 80-140 fluid
1" Addco swaybar
10" Hoosier D5 SLICKS

I have raced this combo two years. Two years proceeding that I ran Precision 4.56 gears.

It's basically the transmission that destroys parts that clash together. Although my converter hits hard enough to raise the front tires, 2.7 torque multiplication, it's all pre-loaded upon launch.

It's like my rearend guy told me... it's not a question of WILL it break, it's a question of WHEN it will break. Another VERY intelligent fellow, Nick Norris, told me if it hasn't broken by now, it may well never brake. I choose to believe Nick. All I know is a 12 bolt will NOT go in until it is PROVEN it is needed!!

Kevin (I'll get you the phone number of the priest whom blesses it and throws HOLY water on it every year!!)

Kevin's conversation with said priest...

"Can you bless my rearend? It's taken a 4 year pounding weekend by weekend. It takes all I can give it and then some"..

So in your opinion, do you think that most 7-5/8" diffs would stand up to a lot of abuse if they were beefed up like you've done to yours? (stronger axles, T/A cover, welding tubes to carrier pot, etc.?).

I'm just curious 'cause my car is a daily driver, but I still want to make it a 12 or 11 second "street/strip" car eventually, and I'd rather invest money into the motor instead of a ~$2500 12-bolt rear end if at all possible?

A4's ** 85% chance of hanging in there for a long time. I'm going for my FIRST 10 second run, (attempt) tomorrow! Whats that take?? About 435 rw HP or so?? If it's gonna brake soon, it will be tomorrow because I'M laying the 150 to it and right off at the top of the converter.

Save your money for engine mods now and worry about the rearend when it starts giving you trouble. I could always make you a good deal on mine!!

Or... I have an extra laying around I could take it to Lansing for the 'RIGHT' build-up and then sell it to you.

HInk

Hmmm, that's a tough one? Do I keep my original rear end with only a few 13.xx second passes on it, or the one that's done SEVERAL 11.xx second runs behind 400+ HP?!?

..............geez, uh, thanks for the offer, but I think I'll stick with my original for now!

Good luck tomorrow trying for your 10-second run!

I'll be there trying to break my rear-end. Hoping for at least a 11.99 on motor and then whatever on the 75 shot. We'll see . I already bought a turbo 400 for next season so I might as well get a 12 bolt at the same time right?

Maybe we can get a discount if we buy two 12-bolts at the same time.

Shouldn't you be doing something at work Mr. Research Manager? Me, on the other hand...okay...I'm at work too but I'm not getting paid enough NOT to go on the internet .

How can you break your rear when you keep getting hoed out by either weather or paternity tests .

Figure anything out yet? I desperately wanna see that car at the track.

Ahhhh you forgot to mention ONLY DRIVEN TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY!!!

If you read the whole post, you'll notice at the bottom I said I had an Extra rearend I could do something with.

Oh well... tiss far, far better you break YOUR rearend than me to break mine!! (NOT a Shakesphere quote)!!

HInk(Sphere) Thanx for the luck wish anyway!

My ability to not whine was streched out at M8. Rear end is finaly pounded enough to compleatly justify a Dana 60. Getting home with out a tow truck -priceless
