It seems I finally damaged the Feeeble305

All I know is, the car got slower and slower over the course of CZ28.com Nats. I knew there was something up, because I have dropped from a 14.0 to a 15.2 E/T, and a loss of 8 MPH. Now, the last run at Stanton was a 16.1 at 87 MPH. I quit after that.

Yesterday I noticed a loud "bang bang bang" whenever I put the engine under load. Today I investigated and found that the loud bang is a pressure pulse shooting straight up the carburator throat! It'll blow fuel 12 inches into the air without the air cleaner!

So, it's my guess that I either burned out an intake valve, or else it's stuck open somehow. I've got to invest some midnight oil to find out if I even want to plan for the M8 event.

I dont have enough money to finish the Minirammed 385, or else I'd just put that in. I could put it in, I suppose, but I'd have to run small tube headers, and podge it up with the old Quadrajet and worn distributor. Somehow that just don't seem like a safe way to break in a new engine...

Hey Dan! I floated the valves while spraying and found the "stumble" my motor has had since then Once spark plug in multiple pieces!! Figured it was a burnt valve but everything is a go! Sorry to hear about your little 305 wonder Wanna test the heads/cam on a nitrous platform? You could make some runs in it then sell the heads/cam for $$$$ since they would have went 11's on a stock bottom ended 305 jk! Hopefully you just have a big misadjustment with the valves...

About the 385...There is nothing wrong with a small carb and old distributor to break it in.(Cheap new distributor could be under $200 easily..or get a used one in good shape) Go for it! When it's all broken it, you'll probably have money for the EFI install and what not. Goodluck man!

sorry to hear about that man. I have another idea, trade me that trans for the 305 that I have. new head gaskets, cleaned valves, new valve seals, around 30K mi.s, but looks new inside still. had very strong oil press. and no noise/smoke when pulled out of my other 85 Iroc.

if not then still call me tomorrow cause I need to set up a time for me to come pick up that trans. still either way. cash or trade. call me.

I found the problem today:

Dead cam.

The #8 exhaust lobe is wiped out, as is the #6 intake lobe. Without an open exhaust valve, the extreme cylinder pressures were forcing open the intake valve at anything above an idle.

The dead #6 intake valve could explain why I went from a 14.0 @ 101 MPH to a 15.2 @ 94 MPH at M7, and why by the end of CZ28.nats I was into the 16.1's...

Funny, I still managed 21 MPG on the way home...

That's odd new, Dan! You thinking of MORE camshaft? little extra lift or duration or are the springs at their limit already? Goodluck on the rebuild. 13.70's here he comes

Right now, I'm thinking of bolting those new aluminum cylinder heads onto the stroker shortblock, and stuffing it in place of the 305. That way, I don't have to spend any more on the Feeble305.

Hmm..... Better plan this out.

THanks, Mike!

I decided not to rush the Minirammed 385 project, so I am going to pop another cam into the 305 for now: I have what appears to be a General Kinetics knockoff of the old 1970 350/300 horse grind. I won't know for sure, but it appears to offer a .450 inch lift, about 224 degrees duration at .050" lift, and a 114 lobe separation angle. Since it's free, I think I'll try it for the remainder of the season. However, I have to get a good portion of the DVD done before I will be comfortable with messing with the car. It's third or fourth in line in terms of projects... I also have a furnace to install in my house

Big-time family commitments. That's why I've been staying up until 1 AM and get up every morning at 6:30 each day.

Still awesome Dan! More time to showcase a 305 top end package worthy of selling to another dude lookin' to go fast....with a 305 when they're ready. Lots of work and you should be rewarded already with a 13.XX timeslip.

Cool another 305 runner. I run low 14's on motor with mine too. My best is a 13.97 one time with it, but that was a couple years ago and with the old rearend, with my 9" the best i've gotten is a 14.1something, can't remember off hand. On the spray i've gotten a best of 11.89. Spray it, they love it, well mine does. Mines stock bottom end with Hypereutectic pistons. The motors about 7 years old since the rebuild, same problem with stock cam, and the last 3 using the spray.
