Reputable tranny shops near Toronto?? (4L60E)
Hey guys,
So I just posted in the drivetrain forum (Uh oh, 2nd gear slipping BAD!!) that my tranny is taking a crap.
I know there are some good tranny builders who post on this site (Probuilt Automatics, and Cahall, just to name a couple) but being up here in Ontario, I was just curious if you guys know of any shops locally who can do a RELIABLE, performance oriented re-build of a 4L60E???
As of right now, the car still drives, but I've got my winter beater ('78 Malibu
) that is still insured and driveable. SO, I've got time on my side, but it's more the cost that I'm a little worried about. I know that Frank at CPT (Cahall) says ~$1000 US$ will buy a fully built, race-ready 4L60E. I'm not opposed to spending that money, but it would be easier to get the car worked on locally (but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, and get a half-a$$ed re-build either
).
Any recommendations?? Or do I crate my transmission up and pay to send it across the border somewhere for a reliable re-build??? Any and all suggestions welcomed!!
(unless somebody has a T56 and all necessary hardware available for a REASONABLE asking price
..... and no, I'm not kidding)

Re: Reputable tranny shops near Toronto?? (4L60E)
Find out exactly what gets upgraded in the tranny and compare that along with price between local and a US shop.
IMO $1000 is a good price for a rebuilt tranny assuming it has the upgraded clutch packs, servos, etc.

I have a gn that drove me nuts, I pulled the transmission on that car in and out 4 times bringing it back to shop that built it tryng to get it right.
Then since the r+r was my time lost, I took it to Transware in Concord.
trans already had all the parts just setup and assembly issues Mike dissassemled checked it out changed whatever it needed and only charged me 600 cd.
Car works great now and they even did a small recalibration on my gov and changed fluid N/C.
Ps: I know gn is a 200r4 but a 4l60 is a walk in the park compared to that 200

Mister Transmission 20 St Regis Ct 416 636 9420
They are off of Keele south of the 407.
They installed my T2r and a couple of clutches. They sponsor a local corvette club and know Fbody's

Re: Reputable tranny shops near Toronto?? (4L60E)
At this point I've decided to go the M6 route
. I debated getting a 6-speed before I even bought my car (~4 years ago!
) so at this point, I think that's what I'm going to do instead. But who knows ... I'm a person who flip-flops on things a lot (geez, 2.73's, 3.73's, 4.10's, all in the same car?!?!
) so I may just rebuild that 4L60E and stick it back in one day?!?!
Thanks again for your recommendations

Re: Reputable tranny shops near Toronto?? (4L60E)
The biggest difference is a matter of control... a 6-speed car is always in the right gear - whatever one you want it in. They're a heck of lot more fun to drive, too. If you get stuck in the 401/400 area at rush hour, though, you'll wish you had an auto!
I've never owned an auto until I bought my Blazer for DD duties. I've gotten used to driving without shifting, but I still prefer a manual, especially in a performance car.
Re: Reputable tranny shops near Toronto?? (4L60E)
^ my thoughts exactly. I mean, I used to drive a (don't laugh, I was a poor starving college student at the time
) Sunfire
, just a '96, 2.2L, 5-speed. But I drove it in stop-and-go traffic for a whole summer with no problems. Now that I "work" for a living, I'm on the highway less it seems?!
(but yeah, 401 through Whitby/Ajax sucks B@LLS!!
)
At this point, I know what my CAR is capable of in the 1/4 mile. I know that with the A4 and a good stall converter, I could hit ~12.5's or so, but now with the 6-speed, I can play around with road racing a little more (the root cause of my A4 dying) and if I go to the drags, good times or bad will be up to me!
Well, I'm off to pick up the tranny RIGHT NOW!!!!
