redroc wrench
Hey, I was just speaking with James about a few things I want to accomplish on my car. He recommended I talk with you about some stuff, being as that you have some experience with 3rd gens and you are a master tech ASE. We could do it here in the forums or I could call you, he gave me your number.
Basically, ever since I bought my car, it would pull nice and easy right up to 5500 rpm, even after my firstand second build, but thats where the fun stopped. Many things have changed but still I get to that rpm and the motor starts to "clatter". Sounds like valve float and the datalogs usually don't show knock. Usually...
So, I guess really what I intend to do to combat this is get a new Walbro or other sufficient fuel pump, get a new distributor and or MSD ignition setup, and get a nice set of AFR or other comparable heads that I know are 100% certified not to have valve float of course with a matched spring setup with my cam.
Really I want 12's out of this car. It should have been close with the setup in my sig but the problems with this 5500 rpm WALL that I would hit limited me from doing so.
What are some recommendations? Do you have any tried and true 12 second combos?
I will be staying fuel injected and I would like to keep the rest of the car the way it is since money is an object of mush desire these days.

You've got all the right pieces to run much better than you have been except for the cyl heads. Pick out a set of aftermarket heads anywhere from 170cc to 210cc (your choice). Any of those cyl heads will work very well with the other parts you have. The only thing I would question is the PROM. Did you trick the knock sensor that you are not showing any retard at WOT? I've read past posts where you have been making your own adjustments and I don't have any experience in prom burning to tell you it's good or bad. I just got done reading a great article in Chevy Hi Performance magazine (I think it was april 02 or aug 02 issue) on how they were able to dip into the 12's on a similar setup using a stock 88 PROM with stock ecm (you can find it on Chevy HiPo website). What is your timing reading at WOT? Minus the Stealth Ram, my son's IROC has been running 13.30-13.40 with a similar setup to yours. I did install the stealth ram setup a couple of months ago and the increase in rpm and pull was felt but I have not gotten any track times in yet because his trans will not shift to third at WOT right now so I need to take care of the valve body before we can get an accurate time at the track. In my opinion, I would just upgrade the heads right now and if you wanted to spend $50, order a prom for a 88 corvette from a dealer and that will give you the extra pulse width and timing you need to run your combo.......It works for me......

I have not tricked the knock sensor in any way, its still fully functional. Shows me about 5* of retard at WOT at various points in the rpm range. I was working with a guy in Arizona through AOL IM on burning a chip for my setup and we got it to "feel" like it was supposed to as opposed to the utter LACK of power it had right after the Stealth Ram install.
The base .bin in my chip is from an '89 vette so affectionately called the ARAP.bin. It was aggressive to say the least. And for all intents and purposes... it seems like its pretty close for the modifications I have made to it. The car pulls smoothly all the way through the RPM band no misfires beause of too much timing. Car stays cool..... I have since learned to do a few more things in teh chip. However without a wideband O2 sensor I'm flying blind.
I'll be getting heads for sure, just depends on which ones will work best. I will also be getting a different cam, my cam is a torque cam, plain and simple. But those 2 things are top on my list.
Thanks for the input

I'll do some searching later today but the 89 vette prom will not work for your application. I bought a 89 vette prom 2 years ago figuring it would help since it was a little more aggressive. It slowed the car down 3/10's in the 1/4. I remember the article in chevy hi performance trying the same thing and they said it also would not work but did use the pulse width and timing features from the 89 prom along with the added fuel program for cold starts since the cold start injector is gone with the stealth ram setup. I'll also let you know exactly what month the holley stealth article was in so you can get some info from it.
Click on this link - http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...holleystealth/ - you may have seen this article in the past but it has some interesting notes in it that may help guide you a little bit to your quest for 12's. I am going to try to locate Mike Davis of Maryland that is mentioned in the article and see if he has any of the specs from the prom burning he did for the magazine, i'd like have him do one for me mainly for the cold starting problem in cooler weather.
