Talking paging Purple Haze and graphic designers...

Hi Rebecca,

I hav'nt met you yet cause i'm not in Michigan for the time being.I am going to school in Phoenix AZ. I am one of Harolds friends. Any way. If I am not mistaken I believe I saw on the board somewhere at sometime that you are a graphic artist of some sort??? Is that correct??? I went home for a wedding this weekend in MI and one of my friends little sisters just graduated from Alma College and is having a tough time finding a job right now. She is willing to relocate to where the work is. Do you have any leads for her or have any advice that I can pass along to her?? Also was'nt there just a new guy who signed up with a 3rd gen T/A?? Because I think he said he was in graphic design also. I think he was from the Detroit area. Any help you can give her is greatly appreciated by her and me.I can give you her e mail address if you would like to speak to her yourself so I don't mess things up by being the middle man.

Thanks for your help,
James

I've been an illustrator/designer for the last 15 years...wish I would have gone to law school or med school. It's a crazy fun business but the hours SUCK. Be prepared to give up any form of a life outside work. Tell her to keep knocking on doors and don't give up. What kind of designer is she? Web? Print? TV? I know alot of art directors in the Detroit area. I may be able to get her some names/contacts to send her portfolio to.

Thanks guys, I emailed her a copy of the page. I don't know exactly what parts she is involved in. I saw her at a wedding and did'nt get to in depth with her there was so many people to see. I knew some people on the board worked in the field so I told her I would throw a line out to try and help her. I will try to get some more info from her. Thanks for the input everyone.

Yes, I do graphic design (and web design), but I've been doing it on a freelance basis so I wouldn't really know where the jobs are. My advice would be to just hand out as many resumes as possible. Go to any and all job fairs. Go to some places that do advertising and graphic design and stuff and give them resumes. If they say they are not hiring, tell them thank you for their consideration and ask them to keep the resume on file. The overall job turnover rate per year is about 25%, which means one in 4 jobs opens up every year. But it may take up to 6 months to find a job that's the right fit for her image of herself. While she's waiting and searching, have her look into work with a temp agency.

We just talked about the job search process yesterday in my HR management class so that's how I'm able to spout off all this stuff... fresh in my mind
