m6 is toasted

well, i finally did it. my trans gave out, not sure what yet but she's dead.

i was aware it needed a syncro/bearing kit, it was getting harder to shift. in recent weeks it had times where it woudn't go into any gear, i had to force it in, it didn't grind gears like a clutch problem but just wouldn't go in.

well on my way to work tues. morning i hit 5th gear on 94 and she let out, nothing in any gear. coasted up the next ramp and towed it home later after work.

it makes sounds kinda like a loose bearing race, the car doesn't move at all.

i'm thinking maybe snapped input shaft. any ideas??

check with rodrigues. He has had his inside a bunch of them lately. You'd be amazed how many people sell what they think is a bad trans only to have it need less than a buck in parts

Sounds like you have some synchros shot and maybe some broken parts but pretty rare. I can rebuilt it for you with D&D synchros and whatever else it needs. You can pull it or I can. Let me know!

thanks for the offer, but i intend to rebuild it myself if it's possible, the real question is are the parts going to cost me more than another trans itself, right now i'm seriously unsure but i'll know more by next week. i'm almost finished with my astro and the car will be apart this weekend, i'd like to know what i'm dealing with by next week so i can find out cost involved and decide where to go from here.

Have you ruled out all clutch problems? IMO you either just have a shifting linkage problem or a clutch problem.

I have a few T56's in my garage if you wanted to throw in a new one. One has a bent output shaft if you wanted to try fixing one yourself.

well, i got the car on stands now. problem is definitely on the input side. with the car in gear the tires are solid, nuetral is fine.
i pulled the slave and everything seems coshier on the clutch end. so it's either clutch or input shaft i gather... i'll know more when i pull it this week.

Let me get this strait, no matter what you do you can't get the wheels to spin in the rear?

99% sure its a clutch problem and 1% sure its a transmission linkage problem.

well pat your were right and i'm lucky!

i sheared the inside of the clutch from the outer ring of friction material.

no more autozone clutches!
anyhow, i still have to put a syncro and bearing kit in the trans, it's getting bad.
