I guess I didn’t consider a stall converter for the first upgrade…Will the stall be too much for the stock rear ends on these cars? Also, what would be the complete cost including installation for the stall converter / 3:73 gear?
Thanks, Chris does great work.

I guess I would ask yourself one question.

1) Do I want to make the power or do I want to go faster? If you want to go faster, start with the converter. If you want the power go with the long tubes and dual exhaust.

Like I said, I would keep your eyes open on the LS1Tech.com board for used parts. There are GREAT deals to be had. You can stretch your dollar a lot further that way. Just buy from people that have good trader ratings. I have bought and sold and have been happy with both. I saved myself about $350 on the converter in my car buying it used. Mine had just been refreshed. Lots of times you can get a used converter that still hasn't been refreshed and can get that done for dirt cheap or free if you get one from a company like Vigilante or Yank.

Hey Chris, can't Larry just take the heads off, take them to Livernois Motorsports and have them mild like .35 and get some great power through compression? In addition, have them clean them up and do a nice blend job and that may be the cheap way of going for good power. Then like you said change the rocker arms for artificial lift? This cost me $350 when I had Livernios do my heads and they turned out nice. Add the long tubes and a nice Dr. Phil tune and I'll bet he would be very happy with that setup in the short run.

Good Luck & Happy New Year!!!

Bill

the regular 30th SS's are still very collectible... and having a modified one would effect the value to some collectors... mine is highly modified but i never plan on getting rid of it.

Re: IrocSS85 - Looking at headers

yeah depends on when you plan on getting rid of it. if your goin to keep it for a very long time, t hen I say enjoy it the way you want it. obviously if your goin to sell it in th enext couple years, then leave it stock.

as for your last question bill, no that would not be cost effective at all. pulling the heads is more work on an LT1 car. so even more labor cost compared to an LS1.

Sorry if I'm a little offtopic but here's a clip of my '97 SS with Pacesetter LT's, 3" Offroad Y-pipe (no cats), and SLP 2OTL. It should give you an idea what the car will sound like with the new exhaust.

Thanks for the clip, zero raspy sound, real nice…Do you a drive-by video?

Did you notice a big difference in level of sound, hopefully 25% increase from stock manifolds with cats? Did you notice a little more jump in the car?

Thanks to everybody I’m 95% sure I’m going with Pacesetter LT's, 3" Off-road Y-pipe (no cats) into my current 2OTL cat back for my first mod…

If you look at my youtube channel, you can see some older clips where I was running Edelbrock Shorty headers, stock dual-cat y-pipe, and a 2OTL. I feel like I noticed a very slight power increase from the shortys, so it should be more substantial coming from manifolds. The sound is a little deeper at idle and it really seems to roar a bit more when you jump on it. Before with the shortys and stock cats it sounded pretty stock, just maybe a hair deeper and a hair more power.

Here's a in-car punch, I apologize I had the radio up fairly loud. This is off my iPhone, I'm currently 120 miles away from my car for school and it's put away for winter.

Here's a better idle clip taken with my iPhone (previous clip I posted was taken with a 5 mega pixel point and shoot)

Post up a clip once you have it done. Based on Spd's sound clips that should be a nice sounding system. The no cats made a big difference in sound on my last car.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks Chris,

Learn something new everyday. I wouldn't think it would be that much difference. Oh course that is why you are the mechanic.

I thought I remember you saying it took a LONG time to do a tune up on these, right? One side is really hard to get to and you have to do some of the plugs almost blind, by feel.

I got a mention! I did have a soundclip somewhere of my car. I'll try and dig it up and link it if/when I find it.

To the OP CAMARO DUDE.

Chris has done all of my work from bone stock to how it is now. I could not be happier. Chris knows his camaro's from Third Gen on. He's done work on many of our cars as you can see. So tell him to clean out his garage and take on some side work. LOL

I've got a small job for him real shortly. More boost!!! Shhhh its a secret and we can't tell Bill.

Re: IrocSS85 - Looking at headers

I would recommend a 3600 vigilante stall, a CC306 cam, some Patriot stage II heads and a tune (plugs, wires and bigger fuel injectors). Opti sparks suck. We've all been through that problem.

You'll meet your goal and be around the 400 rwhp club.

Yea, like you could keep that from me. I can't wait to see you go into the 9's. I have some things up my sleeve but nothing that will get me to your level, yet.

Are you going to see 20lbs? LOL.
