How to get trouble codes?

My car is running really bad. Where can i get it scanned for trouble codes? I have the OBD1 computer. My SES light doesn't work, never has since i got the car, so the pins cannot be jumped. I tried autozone, but they could only jump the pins and read the flashes of my SES light, so that didn't work. One Murray's said that they had nothing to scan my car with while another one gave me the OBD2 scanner with an adaptor cable. But i could not get any readings from it.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for places or have anything themselves that they could help me out with.

Thank you,
-Greg
