Unhappy First time results

Today was my fist time out to the track, with my 86 monte ss. I always knew that these cars could be a tank, but my results left me pondering the thought of selling or modifing. The strip was the Toronto Motor sport (cayuaga speedway) This is a newly redone track and traction seemed to be a problem among everybody.

My times went from a 17:89 to a : 15:32 at 91 mph. The first pass down the track was just a tire warm up for the first 60 ft I would say it time for some new tires. Well Tom and I will put some time into the car over the winter and give it a second go in the spring. If not it might make an excellent boat anchor

Just kidding I have grown attached to it after 10 years

Wink

I told You sell and get an FBody J/K Todd

First step, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, distributor recurve kit, a timing adjustment, some minor carb tweaking and maybe we get the "tank" into the 14's LOL

We have 3 weeks until Nov2-3 the last race weekend to get it done

15.32 at 91 isn't too bad. Was that on street tires? It seems like new tracks are always slick, no matter how great everyone say's they'll hook. Refresh my memory on your gears, trans and motor.

Just as long as it doesn't go faster than my car, or we'll have to throw down...

I was thinking maybe 14.8 to 14.9 with a tuneup,I don't think we could get a whole second out of it

Next year,Vortec Heads, Edlebrock Intake, and a Holley carb. and Drag radials

Should be good for 13's

BTW it does have a 350

cars specs

The cars original 305 H.O is sitting in my garage on an engine stand awaiting the relocation of a boat. The car is running on a rebuilt 350 4-bolt main out of a 1977 suburban. The motor was done 30 over with a mild cam. The heads are off of a 78 camaro. When I put the motor back in , I added edelbroc headers, and a shift kit to the 200 h4 rebult trans. There is about 10 000km's on this package

And I await the show down against the all stock purple haze. Keep in mind that my car is heavier and bigger

Sounds like it's time to remove some luxury junk like sound deadener and all that At least you have a 200/4R. As a hardcore stick guy, that's the only auto I'd ever think about using.

Todd,

Run an Edelbrock RPM Vortech intake
Vortech heads (or even the edelbrock e-tec heads)
Run the comp cams Xtreme Energy cam #12-246-3
its a 230/236 .487/.490 110ls this is with a 1.5 rocker
run a set of roller 1.6 rockers and get .519 / .522
Youl need atleast a 2200 stall, but id run a 2500-2800 stall with like a 3.42-373ish gear
Dont forget a nice holley 650 double pumper

Shift her between 5800-6200rpm

youl be very happy!

what rear gears does the TANK have there Todd? you need a deep gear to get that thing moving. if its not your daily driver, go right for the 4:10's. you can fit a HUGE tire in there so get some nice drag radials. maybe some 295/50/15 nitto's(tall tire equals more traction, but less MPH). that cam the dave recommended sounds good to me too. not too big for such a heavy car w/light mods. what CR you running in that eng.? after the gears, tires, and cam, Id do stall conv..

Go for the 4.10s even if it is your daily driver. With that 0.67:1 overdrive, a 4.10 turns into a 2.73! Even a 4.56 would be like a 3.04

If that is a 1977 motor the compression ratio was like 8.0 1 or 8.5 1. What did you replace them with and what is the compression ratio now. A set of Dart 2 sportsman are cheap and will work wonders. I know a guy who has a set he got from me and never installed them. You could pick them up for like $400.00 or $500.00. They only had about 2000 miles on them. The L98 vette head flow good and are real cheap like $200.00 to $300.00 used. When you change the heads it will make a big difference. I took the Dart 2 sportsmans off and put a set off fully ported vette heads on and they rocked. I have a TPI motor tho and it has run a best of 12.9 at 110 MPH. You could pick up 1.0 or more just from a good set of heads. Don't give up you can make your car run alot better. When I got my IROC new it ran high 15. With enough money you can go as fast as you want.
