Busted wheel studs in rear w/traction control
#17
I guess the question now is what I do when I've got my rear end cover off. I've never removed axles before. Thanks to everyone who's been helping me figure this out. I greatly appreciate it.

I was just wondering if you reached a resolution on this. I have a '95 Formula with a broken stud, with the same reluctor ring interference problem. I don't care about ABS or traction control, so I may just grind away some of the ring so I can get the new stud in.
I wasn't sure why removing the axle helped? I looked like the reluctor ring is pressed on to the axle. My service manual said once the reluctor ring is pressed off, it should not be reused. It seemed to be implying an new axle was needed, but its hard to believe I'm supposed to get a new axle just because one of the wheel studs broke.

if you pull the axle, there will be enough room to pop out the stud w/o messing with the ring. dont grind down your ring though and ruin your abs just to save yourself 30 min.s of work. pulling the axle is very easy, and what better excuse to put in some royal purple synth. axle lube in the rear?

2) Rotate differential carrier until the crossbolt retaining screw lines up in a place where you can unscrew it.
3) Remove retaining screw and let the crossbolt slide out into your hand.
4) Push in the axle with the bad studs about 3/4 inch.
5) Fish out the C-clip which should probably fall out into your hand. (or into the spider gears)
6) Slide out the axle and bang away at that stud.
