Question Brake Upgrade ???

Will just doing slotted or cross drilled rotors all the way around give me better stopping? Or, do I also need to upgrade the calipers too?

Can I go any bigger on the Rotor size with stock calipers?

I'm looking for the cheapest way to get better stopping power out of my car. I was hoping just changing the rotors (which need it) to slotted or cross drilled (Cross drilled or Slotted are better?) and new pads would give me better stopping power?

The brakes have 40,000 on them, just turned 40,000 yesterday. How many miles is normal out of brakes (with going to the striop and brake TQing too)?

Thanks,

Bill

I noticed better feel outta my powerslot rotors F+R. I didn't even upgrade the pads like they recommend. The stockers looked good.

I'm not an expert but I suspect the rotors by themselves offer a minimal improvement in the first stop category. They may have slightly less rotational mass while having more mass in the fire path for heat transfer. The Cross drilled and slotting will vent the heat and dust better which means they will consistently stop better than stock under repeated heat cycling use. Am I right road racers?

The combination of those rotors and better than stock pads (Hawks & EBCs) will make a noticable difference on the first stop and follow up stopping capability.

The next step then is Wilwood or Baer 4 or 6 piston calipers with matched rotors which would really make the big difference. If you really have the cash, the Brembo fronts will stop you like you hit a wall.

Since you already have LS1 front brakes, you should try the LG Motorsports front brake kit. It comes with a bracket, Corvette C5 rotors and calipers, and everything else you need.

http://www.lgmotorsports.com/

If you go to the autocrossing and road racing board you'll see plenty of posts referencing this kit if you do a search.

However, for street driving only the only thing I'd focus on is getting a good set of pads and tires. The LS1 brakes are very good for a street driver.

Jay,

I paid about $400 for my C5 brake setup and I bought some takeoff calipers, rotors and pads from a Vette owner locally who switched his all out for Z06 hardware after about 3000 miles. If you are estimating $400 for a bracket, rotors, calipers, pads, and associated hardware, new, that's a screaming deal. I wish you luck.

Talking

I got a set of take off calipers, rotors, and pads with under 1000 mikes on them for $235 shipped. and brackets for around $100... If it all works out I might be able to hook some other people up with a set up for around the same price or at least point them in the right direction. I will keep you guys posted.
