Anyone like to camp?
Anyone like to camp?
no, I mean REALLY camp...no electricity, no RVs, no "facilities"
I love to get out and pitch a tent or tow the popup into a fairly remote area and setup for a long weekend. There is a place I go up between ******* and Atlanta called the Pigeon River Country State Forest. It's 96,000 acres. I have a spot that backs up to a lake, so I usually take the canoe and fishing poles, etc. There is a large elk herd, tons of deer, coyotes, porcupines, and just about any other michigan wildlife you can imagine (even seen a few bobcat, black bear, and the occasional gray wolf).
It's 13 miles to the nearest paved road, and another 10 or so to one of the towns so we usually make a run a day for supplies (ice, food, BEER, etc) Bathing is done in the lake right by a man made drain/dam area.
We spend the days fishing, canoeing, pitching horse shoes, touring the monstrous chain of two tracks and gravel roads, hiking, cooking over the fire, and generally just enjoying life away from the computer, TV, and other distractions. At most we'll take a radio. Sometimes we can get a group of locals up there we know to come out. They have a hillbilly folk band and will sit around the campfire with us playing spoons, washboard, guitar and singing.
I am thinking about setting up a date mid to late summer to get up there. Usually I go 4th of July weekend, but I haven't looked to see what day the 4th falls on this year. Sounds like Camaro Superfest is that weekend anyway...
Would there be any interest in some rustic camping like this? I haven't decided whether or not to make it kid free or family friendly. I know we kept forgetting at the bonfire there were kids around and had to be good...perhaps we can make it a weekend away from the kids?
Input is welcome, I'd like to see a bunch of us get together and have some fun.
For an idea of where it is at, West siders would go up 131 to Mancelona, then cut across to the east until they hit Old 27 just south of *******. East siders would go straight up I-75 to where it meets 27 north just south of *******. For those that haven't been to *******, it's a beautiful "Alpen" town with more golf courses then any other city in America. It's also an hour south of the bridge, so if someone wanted to make a trip to Mackinac, it would be a reasonable jaunt. We could meet the east and west siders there in *******, load up on supplies, then head out to the woods...
Thoughts? Any idea what would make for a good date to plan this?

We have a place half way in between Onaway and Atlanta off of M33. It's backed up to a place called Canada Creek Ranch, nice place. Everytime we tell someone where the place is they look at us with the most dumbfounded look.
I agree, the area up there is great if you like that sorta thing.

Officiall scared...i'm out
Atlanta! of course, actually tonight Speedvision or the speed channel had the SCCA Pro Rally footage showing tonight from Atlanta Michigan a couple months back when they had severe snow@. I was there with my new 4X4 Explorer burning up the trails to get to the next spectator area quicker than the other people there
And yes I seen myself on Speedvison tonight standing in the snow with some other crazy assed people who were out there

yeah i like roughing it but i'm too used to staying busy. so instead i hunt or fish while camping. no i mean really hunt and really fish!! get up before light and get set.
i'm planning a trip up to the rifle river recreation area late june early july to hit their rustic sites and do some serious trout fishing with the canoe! kinda funny you mentioned it. and no i don't consider a park roughing it so much just the best trout fishing i know of in this state in the rose city area.
we usually hit up south branch for hunting, drag the camper back where nobody bothers us and stay for the first 1 1/'2 of the season. love it.
