Exclamation anyone have knowledge of relays????

i'm trying to hookup a few accessories remotely through my alarm......to do this i need to use a relay inline with the channel expander for the alarm. anyone have experience with this?

the relay has 5 wires like most......

1)#85 black ground wire

2)#86 red power wire

3)#87 (NO) brown wire(normally open, connected
to #30 when relay coil is energized)

4)#87A (NC) orange wire(normally closed, connected to #30 when relay coil is engergized)

5)#30 (COMMON) yellow wire (when the coils is not energized 30(common) conncects to 87a) (when the coil is energized 30 (common) connects to 87)

it says to activate the relay, determine what the trigger signal will be, and connect the opposite end of the coil to constant power or ground as required.

the signal wire from the channel expander box is a negative output.

any ideas? i know there are a few of you out there who could make this a piece of cake please help......

Since your alarm box is sending out a negative signal you would hook a constant 12 volts to the #86 terminal and your alarm signal to the #85 terminal.

No, actually you need to use the other terminals to activate the other items. You would most likely use the normally open terminal and the common. The common is where you would hook either +12 volts or ground depending on what the item needs to activate. The normally open terminal will then pass this voltage or ground to the item only when the relay is activated. Whereas the normally closed terminal will pass voltage or ground all the time except for when the relay is activated. If you post a detailed explanation of what you are trying to do I could help you more.

i'm actually planning on using a few relays for the following:

the first one will be using the relay to turn on an underbody set of neon lights.........the transformers are already grounded so i just need to get power to them; i would still like to use the existing switch when inside the car if possible.

the second will be used for the purge on my N2O.

and the third will be used for my windows.

the first two are more for show where as the third actually has "some" practicality....... but it's all in good fun right!!

thanks for all and any more help you can give me.

The first two relays are going to be wired the same with +12 volts at terminals 86 & 30. Your wire from the alarm will hook to terminal 85 and then terminal 87 will connect to the lights and the hot lead for the purge solenoid.

The relay for the windows I believe would have ground connected to terminal 30, but I would have to double check a wiring schematic to verify. Are you trying to use the relay to open the windows or close them?

for the lights and the purge could i go this route??

87 (constant +) w/ jumper to 86

85 alarm ground (-) output

30 neon & purge (+) input

I wouldn't run both of them off the same relay unless you know exactly how many amps each draw and the total is approximately 75% of what the contacts in the relay are rated for.

no, i was just curious if i could go the same style of routing.........

seeing as how the purge uses the power from the main turn on lead and a ground to complete the circle.

thanks for the help as the lights worked well, i ran into a small problem though.

after about 2 minutes one set of the lights will shut off.........this happens wether i use the remote relay setup or the standard switch. what could that mean?

Oh, yeah the wiring style will be the same.

Do the lights have a thermal overload or anything like that to shut them off? It sounds like a problem with the light itself.
