I would guess its the idler pulley that has taken a dump, a common problem with GM.

my neighbor had a problem. I was helping him with it for a bit... I kept thinking it was a belt or pulley. He kept messing with that...

Ended up being the intake gasket leaking causing squealing. Gives a belt/pulley sound though.

There are a few around here, I could look at it too, let me know if you can bring it over here(just south of Detroit)

I know this will sound funny, but check the pcv valve. sometimes people will change the pcv valve and the oring will come out with the orig., and not get put back in. resulting in a huge vacuum leak into the crankcase. and it willsuck air into the eng. usually through the oil pan seal (or any gasket for that matter) squeeling really badly. an easy way to check this is while its making the noise, take the oil filler cap off. if thats it the car will almost stall, and you'll be able to hear/feel the air being sucked into the valvecover through the filler neck.

you could always bring it to my work at bob sellers pontiac gmc in farmington hills if you cant find anyone close enough to you. Id do it at home, but I now live in waterford, not exactly close to you.

If its the 3.1 V6 then my bet is on the leaking intake gasket. I replaced one on my friends Malibu 2 months ago and I was suprised that it was the intake and not a bad pulley.

if you say the pulleys don't line up, the belt was probably puttin extra side force on one of the pulleys and caused a bearing to go bad. i'd suspect the idler pulley on the tensioner to be the first to go, but the alternator pulley bearing is also a weak point. if they're bad you can usually just tell by listening closely to it.
