Alternater Help

I pulled my car out of storage and it wasn't able to start without a jump. I took it to the dealer and they are saying it needs an alternator. They charged my battery and I picked it up from the dealer (Bill Crispin Chevy, Saline) .While driving it the alt gauge shows slightly on the positive side. I was told by the dealership that the alt. was putting out almost 0 charge. So, would the alt gauge show positive if the alt was truly bad? I drove it about 10 miles shut it off and started it back off a few times, no problem. I left it at another shop to get a second opinion.

Oh yea, no battery light or Alt light on in the car.

Please give me input..... I hate to spend $300+ for nothing.

Thanks.

Bill

Re: Alternater Help

bill, shoulda brought it to me at work. I can check stuff out for ya no charge some times (its always worth a call to see if you can bring it in). something like that would have been no problem. still can look at it if you want. and, fix it while you wait (ofcourse Id have to charge you something, but I can swing you a deal on labor too.)

Should be able to get a rebuilt sheaper than 300 from a reputable place like Suburban starter/alternator in roseville, they'll even build one to your specs...i.e. higher output.

I got one from a local auto parts store (Novi Autoparts) for about $85. I'd be surprised if there was a $220 difference between 3rd and 4th gen alternators. Though, working at a dealer, I can see an alt from one being pretty rediculous.
