Time to beg for help

OK guys, I hate to bring it to this level, but I most start getting on my hands and knees to beg for help. I am not asking for money or anything like that but just wondering if any of you guys that are local have parts just sitting around that you would not mind parting with rather cheeply. Specifically I am looking for a set of 4.56, or 4:10 (or 4:11) gears for the 10 bolt, for a cheap price I can even trade fo the 3.73's I am curently running after I get everything swapped around. I just can not afford to get a new set then pay for the install prior to the shootout but I think the 3.73's are really holding me back for the bolt-on record. I was hoping to swap out the rear all together but a few unexpected bills came up and now I need to stick with the 10 bolt, any help or if you know someone who might be able to help is appreciated...

How many miles are on your 3.73s? How beat is the rear?

Less then 100 miles on the 3.73's, but a good number of those miles were just looping around pits and down the 1/4 mile, I would have to guess at least 50 or so passes on the gears since they were installed in the fall of 06. I got them install 2 days before the last day the tracks were open that year, drove the car 45+ miles to Cecil where I met up with my buddy to borrow his trailer and trailered it ever since, except when I had to drive it to the inspection station to have it inspected about 20 miles round trip. After the first 10 or so passes they got a little noisy but nothing I was worried about, after I had the guy who set them up look it over and he said it was fine...

They were setup by Ron Rhodes at Rhodes Custom Auto in DE...

Here's the deal. I have a stock rear w/ 4.10s under my car. I'm going to a 9" and have the rear promised to a friend. If he doesn't want it, I'll sell it to you cheap, $100 and then you can sell your rear. I will tell you that it makes some noise, but you could keep your center section if this one lets loose. You have some options and I'll try to help you out if I can.

That would be great if this works out, and Coopersburg is only about an hour N. of me, thanks for the offer and let me know how it goes with your friend...

I talked to my friend and he still needs the rear. Sorry I couldn't help you out. I'll keep an eye out for other stuff for you.

Thanks for trying...

BTW, Does he just need a rear, or is he also looking for the 4.10's? I have my stock rear with the stock 2.73's in good shape sitting in my shed, He can have that or I can still use that as my backup or trade up the rear with the 3.73's, both were 4ch rears. The rear with the 3.73's had the axle tubes welded for more support and it has been painted hammered metal gray, I would probably want to keep my support cover though, and I would need to pull the ARP wheel studs, so that my draglites can be remounted, unless you have those on yours already. As you can tell I have a good deal of money into mine, but would be willing to trade if that works out to be the best way to getting the gears that I want so that I can get closer to the record...

I have a pic of my rear just after it was installed,

Plus more, not of the rear directly, but you can see it...

Oh and this offer is open to anyone with a decent rear willing to trade...

I think he wants the rear from my car because he knows what he's getting. Prior to your last post we talked about it and that's the impression he gave me.

cheep as possible, I was hoping to have more money available for mods but the more I look into things I need to get done the more the money adds up...

I am almost getting to the point of saying the hell with it and not try for the record until things here get better...

it's either that or start racking up the credit cards, but I have always tried to do mods without hitting the plastic, because that could start getting dangerous...

well a friend of mine did my gear install, and i tell you what man he did an awsome job. he charges 200 bucks to do it, which is dirt cheap, and ill help you get it to his house and back. all we have to do now is find you a set of gears, which shouldnt be that hard to come by. ill ask some of the local guys.

Schweet, thanks for telling me about that, the guy who did mine charged 300 so that is a decent savings there... I might just bite the bullet and by a set of cheep summit gears, I have a friend using them and they are noisy but they held up to som serious passes, and they are only $140 most guys on here selling used gears are asking 150 or more...

So does your buddy have a shop with all the tools to remove the bearings and reuse then since technially they are not bad? or would I need an install kit with at least the pinion bearing? Solid pinion spacers are reusable right, or would I need a new one of these too? I know if I used a crush sleeve I would need to replace it but not sure about the solid piece...

Hey man, my name is Jay, Im the one that set up Shweets gears. Your pick on the summit gears is a good one, from what i hear they are richmond gears relabeled as summit brand. Explaining why they are louder and take a beating.

I hate to make ya look into spending more money but I usually like to work with new bearings since that is the most accurate way to set the pinion preload. It is possible to use the old bearings but the preload wouldnt be at precise. I THINK a basic install kit, which is the carrier bearings, pinion bearings, shims and compound is maybe $50 or $60 from summit. If your gonna set up a brand new gear set I cant see why risking anything by reusing bearings, especially when you plan on cuttin near 1.5 60 foots with a 4.10 10 bolt. You gonna be on the limit especially if you flash the converter with slicks.

I subscribed to this thread and will try to keep an eye on it. Shweet (Harold) is on here alot more than me so he will prolly keep me more up to date with this...If you decide to do this have you considered how you would get the rear up here to the NE? Between Harold and myself we will have somewhere to do the setup, both places have presses and i would bring all the tools needed for set up.

Jay,

Getting the rear out and up there is no issue at all, it can take me about an hour at the most to pull it. The more I think about it the more I am going to start pricing a new gear set and install kit, and I will let you know. I just need to see how much money I have available...

BTW, do you know if the solid pinion spacer is reusable or if I should get a new one of those as well?
