NJ People who passed emissions

What cams were you guys running, and does anyone have any experience with what you can "get" to pass and what just won't pass emissions here?

I have to take my car in sept. of 2003. I'm not evening going to try to get it done at a state facility, i'm just gonna go to a local garage. I know a few places that will pass it as long as it drives. Even though its mostly stock, i don't really even wanna try for state inspection.

If you know anyone that does inspection at a private garage, I would go there rather than state. Those guys at the state run facilities are a bunch of hand jobs. I took my car to state the first time, it has a stock motor, long tubes with 2 cats, EGR and AIR pump intact and functional, and it failed miserably for NOX, mostly becase something was wrong with the program in the OBD1 PCM. You could pull a spark plug out and it would be black cause it was running so rich. So, after putting the OBD2 PCM back in, and new EGR valve, It ran much better, plugs looked clean. I took it back and it still failed, but not as bad. Not to mention that they let the car sit there and idle for like 20 minutes before they performed the test, which doesnt help at all. I took it to a local place in town that does state, and it had a new sticker on it when I went to go pick it up. I didnt ask for the results or anything, but as long as it has a new sticker on it, I could care less. But being its a stock motor with all of the emissions equipment intact, there is no reason it shouldnt pass. Supposedly they are supposed to be switching to the new plug in test for 96 and up cars with OBD2, which would be great since my car runs great with OBD2 and doesnt throw any codes. From what I understand, it seems alot of cars, even ones that are only 2 years old and getting inspected for the first time fail often. In my opinion, its because of the system and the people who operate it. Oh, and special thanks to the former furor, er govenor Christine Whitman for this fiasco.

ok this is what i am going to do. i only use my z for going to shows and weekend driving. my car is due this may, i am going to register my car as a COLLECTOR VEHICLE it is for cars 20 years or newer. i will not have emissions test done . they just check to see if your odometer is working. they will let you drive 3000 a year. that works for me, it may not be good for some of u guys but thats the way i am going. o you get a triangle inspction sticker also. its 25$ to register, then 10$ to renew it . so that saves a litle money there. you also have to have collector insurance. that no proplem . and that alone is a big saveings for me. but i did take my car to the state once and i had no proplem. it went right through. but the people there suck . like i want some dumb *** drive my car. they have no respet, slam my drivers side door shut when they got out of it. mann i was pissed . it souned like my power windo motor went through the door.

I just squeaked by with my supercharged 93 Z28 with SLP chip, 160 t-stat and some exhaust mods. I thing everybody has run into issues with high NOX. My brother's 90 Honda Prelude failed several times until he finally was able to get it passed. It's free to try at the state run facility so give it a shot. Then if you fail, go to your local garage.

The reason I ask is because I want to run a CC306 or comparable, but want to be legal. My car passed in 2001 with 1/2 a cat. The stock cat has two catalysts, and the rear one broke apart, so I dug it out. It passed with flying colors except for C02, which was at the limit. In any case, Are there any south Jersey places that anyone can recommend who might be a little leniant on us enthusiasts?

I will be in the same boat as you Fastbird93, I will be doing a heads and cam swap in the next few months. I am looking to with a cam similiar to the CC306, so i will have fun trying to pass emissions myself. My car will have all of its emissions equipment intact after the swap, so it will pass a visual. I even passed the state visual with my long tubes, they had no idea that they are not legal, they just saw that I had 2 cats, EGR and AIR. I do hear of guys passing the IM240 test with CC306 type cams, and special programing that they only use for the test. Dont worry fellas, if there is a will, there is a way

If all else fail you can find a local shop to do it for you. Not that this is an easy thing to do, but I will say that there is atleast 1 shop locally that can help. BTW, I just recently had my car done. They did not have to do an IM240 test... thats right fellas. They did a standard 2500 rpm test "due to the configuration of the vehicle". And I quote that from the paperwork that was submitted to DMV. So there are ways around it, they just are not advertised. So they do NOT have to do a roller test. The old way of testing is still around and legal... if your "vehicle configuration" will not allow a roller test.

I wish I could... but I have no idea what they were talking about. I just wanted you to know that they can say that and only do a 2500 rpm test. I assume it would be not a good configuration if it had true dual exhaust... the test equipment only has 1 sniffer... kinda hard to test only half the motor on a IM240 test.. Thats my best guess really.

I dont know, my car has a sticker on it... thats all I cared about. The funny thing is that I almost never drive it anymore. lol.

Just my opinion, but I highly doubt you'll ever get a 306 to pass emissions legally. A lot of work in prep and a custom "emissions" tune might get you there, but I doubt it.

Chris

P.S. letting the car idle for 20 minutes actually does help, it gets the cats REALLY hot which is a good thing.
