"Collector Car" Status in NJ
"Collector Car" Status in NJ
Does anyone know what qualifications a car needs to meet in order to be considered a collector car and thereby exempt from emissions testing? I know a historical car has to be over 25 years old, but according to the DMV's website, there's no age restriction on the collector car classification. It only states that it must be insured as a collector car and cannot be driven more than 3,000 miles annually. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, is a 95 Z/28 a collector car since technically Camaros are icons and no longer in production?
Thanks,
Keith

Re: "Collector Car" Status in NJ
I have tried this before and here were my results. You can register a 95 as a collector, but it must be insured. Nobody will insure a 93+ F-body as a collector car... therefore you can not get it registered as a collector thru the state without proof of collector car insurance.
If you find out something different please post.

A neighbor of mine recommended trying Hagerty which he uses on his 1st Gen Firebird. Doesn't seem likely from their website that they'll insure a run of the mill 4th Gen, but I'm going to try. Anyone deal with them before?

I checked them out for my '95. They will insure the car when stored, when being trailered to the track, and in the pits. No coverage for driving on the street or when acturally racing.
Re: "Collector Car" Status in NJ
This topic was recently brought up on my forum, and it seems as though you do not need specialized collectors insurance, you only need to have the car insured as a limited-use vehicle (basically as a second vehicle on the same policy as your daily driver).
I haven't actually spoken to anyone at the DMV about this, but some members of the NJFBOA say this is all you need....

Re: "Collector Car" Status in NJ
FWIW I have seen the triangular 'collector car' sticker on a 4th gen F Body at the track [Raceway Park], but I didn't ask how he got it.. so apparently it is possible..
My interpretation of the status is you need collector car insurance, can drive no more than 3000 miles per year, and you go to the back end of the inspection station for 'mileage verification' annually where they apply the triangular sticker..

Collector Vehicles
For a vehicle to be designated as a "collector vehicle," the owner must apply* at the time of registration or renewal for this designation and must provide evidence that the vehicle
is not registered as a "historic vehicle," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.3 et seq., or a "street rod," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.27,
is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year,
is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle." (Proof must be supplied at time of odometer verification.)
For inspection-exempt status, the vehicle must be taken to a state inspection station for odometer and insurance verification.
Visit the exit end of the inspection station within 90 days of purchasing a collector vehicle.
Ask the inspector to verify the odometer reading of the "collector vehicle"; MVC may require that the vehicle be equipped with an odometer lock.
Pay fee ($25 and $10 per renewal) for the special decal which indicates that the vehicle is exempt from safety and emission inspection.
*Call MVC at 609.292.6500 or (toll-free in NJ) 888.486.3339 for an application. Submit the completed application to any MVC agency or by mail to

You must show proof of "limited use collector vehicle" insurance. Regular insurance is no good. I did find a comapny that would insure the car but it was outrageous in price... I'm talking tripple normal insurance. IMO it just wasnt worth it for 3000 miles a year or 0 street use in my case.
If you can find reasonable price coverage as a "limited use collector vehicle" Let me know! I will jump all over it too. I was not able to find it after 9 months of searching.
I would love to be able to take my z for a spin on the street once an a while but $3000+ for the ins I found just wasnt worth it.
Re: "Collector Car" Status in NJ
just found it. This is the place I found insurance but its technically not "collector car" ins... and it was very expensive.

Try this. http://www.collectorcarins.com
They helped me find the right insurance for me. Hagerty was the 1st comp I checked out about 2yrs ago, but they didn't want me just because it was a Camaro I drove. You will hear that alot. Some advertise that that they take any yr or type of car. But as soon as they hear F-body or Mustang there like "we don't insure them type of vehicles" You ask them why, and they tell you that they have problems with the young crowd who owns them. Then you ask your self, ok, how about them damn imports! Anyway just blowing out some steam cause it took me some time to find insurance for my car.
I have a 95 Z28 also as a collectore car. $270 a yr 4 full coverage. Need to have a garage that lockes up, a seperate daily driver. And depending the company you will be covered the mileage that you driving you vehicle. Cause there are comp that will alow you unlimited mileage. Mine is some what like that. I just had to let them know how many mls I will drive it aprox a yr. I put for 3000. But I don't even think I put over 1500. Anyway I hope this will help you guys find something for you car.

Re: "Collector Car" Status in NJ
I tried about a dozen specialty insurance companies, and couldn't get a single one to insure me and my car. They either wouldn't take the car ('87 Camaro) or they wouldn't take me (too young at 23 yrs old).
I heard from several people that you don't need to have a separate policy for the car, it just needs to be registered with your current company as a limited-use vehicle. I have to get around to calling the DMV and speaking with them about it.
