Zr1 rims getting stuck on the axle

My Zr1 rims are getting stuck on the axle. I did my rear brakes and it took me an hour of pounding to get my afs zr1 rims off the back of my 94 TA. Does anyone else have this problem ? Am i able to take the dremel to the inside of the rim to open it up? It is the little circle inside the rim that seems just a wee bit to small.

Yes, you have to grind the lip inside the hub of the rim down a little. I used sanding drums in a power drill to do it, but a dremel would also do the trick.

The earlier rear brake disks are a little bigger.

It's a difference in axle hub size, not brakes.

In '97, the hub was slightly enlarged for some reason, so all wheels from 97+ need to be grinded down about 1/16" all the way around for them to properly fit on 93 - 96 model years.

Umm, actually, the hub got SMALLER in 98. wheels from 93-97 should fit any 4th gen. 98 and up wheels wont fit on the 93-97 without grinding.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the problems started in 1993, due to GM using the "corporate parts bin" approach on the 4th Gen, and pulling the front hub/brakes from one car and the rear axle/hubs from another. The rear hub ended up 0.03" larger in diameter than the front hub. I believe it was only corrected later... 96 or 97.

Just curious.... didn't you notice the rear wheel/hub interference when you installed the wheels? Most people notice it as soon as they try and fit the rear wheels on. And don't forget to grind the front wheels as well, so you can rotate the wheel/tires.

I've had sort of the same problem on my 94. The wheels stick on the back. I've had to replace the studs several times and getting ready to have to do it again.

The wheels "stick" on so hard, you have to wrestle them off.

Why would you install them that way? The wheels are centered by the conical lugs. The reason you are having problems with the studs is because the wheels aren't centering correctly, and your studs are seeing bending loads, in addition to the tension loads that they were designed for.

But why do the fronts not do that?? I have two sets of wheels, some Borbet Type T 17x9.5 and ZR-1 replica's, 17x11 and both of them do it.

The center hub area on the front is smaller than what is on the rear axle.

I think I read the answer. Grind the hub a little.
