Your opinions on my planned mods?

Here's what I have planned for my '97 LT1 with 75K miles and A4 tranny & 3.23 rear end.

-- Pace Setter LT's with true duals 3" all the way back, no cats
-- O2 sims for the post cat sensors
-- EGR block off
-- CAI with K&N filter
-- MSD 6AL Ignition
-- TB bypass
-- MadZ tune or equivalent
-- A4 shift kit
-- both tranny & engine oil coolers
-- 160 degree t-stat
-- 58mm throttle body
-- possibly the granatelli MAF
-- bored intake to 58mm at entrance..not at the heads

What will all this get me to in HP as well as 1/4 mile time?
I'm pondering the possibility of a computer controlled wet N2O system with TB plate set up for 100-125 HP with a window switch set at 3000-6000 if the above won't net me enough.

If the above mods (without the spray) won't get me past a stock LS1, I'll probably use the money I would have spent on mods, and put it towards an LS1 and start from there.

Thanks!

That sounds good, what mufflers? You don't necesarily need duals, but it will sound nice
-- O2 sims for the post cat sensors
Good idea
-- EGR block off
This is going to do absolutely jack s*** for performance, don't waste your time.
-- CAI with K&N filter
Always a good mod
-- MSD 6AL Ignition
Not needed, spend your money on something else unless you plan on using this as your rev limiter for nitrous use
-- TB bypass
You get what you pay for, and this mod is free.
-- MadZ tune or equivalent
Not a bad way to squeeze a few more ponies out for relatively cheap
-- A4 shift kit
Will help if you run sticky tires, if not you'll just sound cool chirping the tires going into second and breaking tranny mounts
-- both tranny & engine oil coolers
Trans cooler is a good idea, engine oil cooler not needed, especially with the 160* thermostat
-- 160 degree t-stat
Won't do much at all for performance, Hypertech has brainwashed people with their propaganda, lol.
-- 58mm throttle body
With just bolt ons that will be $310 down the drain since the stock TB will be more than capable of feeding air to your motor. For reference I ran a stock TB on my car with ported heads/HOTcam and didn't see a restriction.
-- possibly the granatelli MAF
See my comments on the TB above.
-- bored intake to 58mm at entrance..not at the heads
Look two lines above this one.

Mid 13's

Sounds good, set the switch for 3000-5700

If you buy mods that will actually add power, unlike an engine oil cooler, 58mm TB, 6AL, Granatelli MAF, etc. then for the same amount of money you could be ahead of an LS1
You need to buy stuff that works. Intake, headers, exhaust, tune, stall converter, shift kit, trans cooler, tune, roller rockers, could all be had for about what you'd pay for your above parts that you picked out.

Re: Your opinions on my planned mods?

Like the other guy stated, everything looks good to me except stay the heck away from the 58mm TB (stock 48mm is fine for your bolt-on set-up) and the Granatelli MAF (one of the biggest waste of $$$ hands down of all the aftermarket mods out there for our cars). Again, the stock MAF works great even at really high horsepower levels. When it comes to your car's A/F ratio, have 'em adjust it on the dyno with a Mass Air Flow Translator (can be found used for cheap like I did for my LS1) or do it with LT1 edit.

BTW, do NOT forget a good 2800-3200 stall combined with some Nitto DR's for your A4. The TC is the single best mod anyone can do for the automatic transmission. Period. The trans cooler will really be needed for that too.

Good luck,

Mike

Re: Your opinions on my planned mods?

Great tips above..thanks! I was wondering if I should divert all the money into getting a hotter cam and roller rockers. I'm worried the shop cost would be too high here in Hawaii though...don't have the expertise or time to go that deep into the engine.
I'm definately getting the headers and dual exhaust though. HAven't picked out a muffler yet. I currently have stock manifold & exhaust with a Flowmaster 80 series muffler...wanting something louder and maybe more agressive than that but not offensively or "wake the dead" loud.

Also, don't want to drop money on a stall until the tranny goes out. When they have it off, I'll have them put the high stall TC.

If it's just a matter of changing the "gears" in the rear end, I may go for the 3.73 rear end ratio as well. I see kits for relatively cheap in the internet.

If you have the car tuned, just have the tuner turn off the post cat O2s and save yourself a few bucks on simulators.
