YALT1TWS (Yet another LT1 That Won't Start)
YALT1TWS (Yet another LT1 That Won't Start)
I've been working on a '94 Z28 trying to solve a starting issue. When the key is turned, most of the time it only clicks (at the starter). If you turn it enough times eventually it will start. We assumed it was the solenoid so we replaced the starter and it still does it. I dropped the starter back down and installed a switch from the solenoid directly to the battery and it turn over and starts everytime if the key is in the on position. This tells me that it's something in wiring for the solenoid. At the start solenoid I'm only getting about 8 1/2 volts on the small post (battery is around 12.5). I think I've tested all of the VATS relay and it seems to be working. It does have an aftermarket alarm, but I bypassed it's relay and it didn't make a difference. The yellow wire coming from the ignition switch only has about 10 volts when the key is in the start position, but the red wire has 12.5 so that seems a little strange to me like an ignition switch is possibly going out...
Is there anything else I should check?
Thank you,
Jeremy

I always give the stock answer on these things, because I rarely understand the problem....make sure you have a "good" battery and connections before you look at anything else. Sometimes aftermarket security systems drain batteries and you can't charge a battery enough by just driving it around once in awhile. JMHO

Well, its been a while since ive done this repair so i cant exactly remember what all i checked. But I do know that your bypassing it, and now everything is fine. You are the weekest link, G'bye! lol. Do a little more looking into it, but Id bet you lunch thats what it is.

When I was doing my headers I had done somthing really stupid and put the computer ground or somthing like that on the starter. It would start if I did the bypass thing. But just make sure all your wires are in the correct places. I beleive I used a picture on one of these threads to figure it out, just do a search.
