XE224/230 Guys inside plz!

Im currently looking into installing an XE224/230 cam in my car, which is as follows:

95 T/A, 6 speed, 3.42gears

Mac Midlegnths, CAI, STOCK heads

Im hoping to install the cam this spring, and then possibily have the heads worked this summer when i get the money. Im looking for good performance all thru the powerband, while maintaining relative driveability and mileage, and not rapping the motor too tight.

So my question for you all is are you happy with your 224/230? I know some people have said they wished they went bigger, but im afraid to on the stock heads. What would you do in my shoes?

What kinda HP do you think this setup would make? (with a tune of course)

Also, where is a good place to buy XE cams from? i know it is ~$350 from comp cams, is that a good deal or can anyone point me in the direction of a cheaper place.

THanks for your time

Austin

Im getting the same cam, Check out thunderracing.com i believe they are $249.99, But im not doing it till i get new heads and roller rockers, also youll want to change your timing chain to a double roller, with that youll have to get an electric waterpump which will openup more horsepower or you can get the GM Extreem duty LT4 timing chain and still use your stock waterpump

I have the 224/230 in my 94 z28 with stock heads and bbk shorties. This is a great cam for street driveability. I would estimate that my car pulls right at 300 rwhp with a powerband of 2000-5800 rpms. Make sure you go with some good .600 lift valvesprings. You will be amazed at how much quicker your car will rev to 6000 rpms. I strongly recommend going with 4.10s or 3.73s as this cam will take some low end power away. I estimate that my car will be running high 12.s with some suspension work and tires this spring. I also recommend Bryan at PCMforless for your tuning. I get about 12 miles to the gallon around town and 18-20 on the highway but im always WOT. Whatever you decide, take your time and make sure everything is right. Good luck!!

I have the cam and ported heads, and LOVE the setup. Even not running right it's nasty.

Here is my dyno sheet. Nice flat torque curve, and power on demand. VERY streetable.

You don't need a double roller with a cam install...you may not even need to change your stock chain unless you plan on some high revs...

I haven't decided whether or not an electric water pump is worth it or not...theyre only good for so long and when they go out you're in trouble...I know of many people wh ohave used them for over a year but not much past that...

I'd advise getting an aftermarket oil pump...that should also free up some horses...

You should at least replace the timing set, even if it is only with a stock set (chain, crank gear, and cam gear). A stock set is not that much and is some added assurance. My stock chain was so stretched that it came off with only a screwdriver. I went with a Cloyes True dual roller and electric water pump.

I love the cam. I got mine from www.cmotorsports.com They had a package deal going on with springs pushrods and lifters. I paid like $600 with everything. I highly recomend them to anyone who is looking to get a cam. Contact them and see what they say. That's the cam they recommended to me over the Hot Cam.

You should get somewhere around 340-350rwhp with a good tune.

The heads are Combination Stage 2.... approx $1,600. They flowed 290/190 at .600 lift... flow sheet sent by CM and verified by Race Prep... came within 5 CFM at all lifts.

Just incase you didn't see it.. this cam is in a 383. TQ is flat every where with over 350 ft.lbs. through 4000 RPM.

Yeah, I saw the 383 part. I just figured the heads were key. What were the mid-lift numbers if you don't mind.

Those aren't LT1 castings are they?? I've never heard of a stock casting flowing that much.

See my sig for what a 224/230 cam can give you!!! It starts pulling at around 3000rpm and keeps pulling right up to about 6000rmp!!! It has a bit of lopey idle...just enough to know that it's not stock!!! It still can get 25mpg on the hwy!!!
Good luck with your build!!!

I was looking at your sig. Why didn't you go with the 1.6 rockers?? Just out of curiousity.

I disagree with the oil pump statement.

Wow way to disagree and not give any reason why?
