XE 224/230 Cam guys in here please....

Hey guys. My next to my car will be a set of MAC headers/y-pipe, and cat. After that I want to do a cam. What do you guys think, the HOTCAM or the XE 224/230? My car is an A4 and my dsaily driver. How does the XE cam idle? I know someone out there as to have this cam. Tell me all about it. Thanks!

I put an XE224/230 cam in my 95 TA this spring!! It idles a little rough but not too bad. Just enough to know that it isn't stock anymore!!! It doesn't produce any power under 3500rpm and will put you back in your seat at 4500rpm! I also had my PCM reprogrammed by Ed Wright of Fastchip. He bumped my rev limiter up to 6800 (but I don't take it there too often!). So far I like it! Are you doing heads, rockers, etc?

Hey, I also just put in the xe 224/230. I would definetly take it over the hotcam, because it will produce more power. What r your goals for your car? Will you be doing the heads within the next year or two. If you are I would definetly do the 224/230 or 230/236. I wish I would have gone bigger b/c i will probably be doing the heads next year. If your on a budget though the hotcam would be a little cheaper, and could maybe give you a little extra money for other mods. As far as idle its a little choppy and sounds alot meaner than stock, although i havent heard a hotcam im pretty sure it will be fairly similar since there both on 112 lsa's.

Thanks for the reply's guys. My goal with the car is 12's. Mid-low, just 12's. I will be doing MAC mid-lengths, 1.6 RR's and the normal that goes along with doing a cam (no Mezaire though) I think I will go with the 224/230. I have had CC cam's befoire in my 66 Chevelle and I really liked them. I am guessing the 224/230 would kinda be like their 268 cam is for older muscle cars (thats what I had in the chevelle, with RR's). Any hp numbers or track times with the XE cam yet?

I've got a CC XE 224/230 but unlike most I'm on a 114 LSA rather than a 112 LSA. My car has good torque from about 2500 rpm up but really comes alive above 4500 rpm. It also passed the IM240 dyno emissions, which is something you might not be able to do with the 112 LSA. 114 LSA = give up some mid range power, gain some idle stability and pass emissions. Your choice.

Just thought I'd also say if you're planning on running 12's you'd get more hp out of long tubes than macs. I wish now that I had a pair of hooker lt's instead of my macs.

The 224/230 is very similar to the Hotcam. Yes is going to make a little more hp. It will have fairly lopey idle but will be fine for a daily driver. As for long tubes yes you will make more hp but on top end. You will probably loose a little low end torque. And for some reason, which had been dicussed many times a better 60ft means better et's. Go figure.

Thanks again for all the respones guys. I really wanted long tubes, but I can save some $$$ and just get the MAC's and Y-pipe for under $400, I also have to pass stinkin' emissions. I want the 112 LSA, I love lopey idles.

If you want to pass emissions, stick with a 114 LSA. I don't know of anyone who has passed with a 112 LSA and a 224/230, but I do know of at least one person on this board who has repeatedly failed with the 112 LSA. With the 114 LSA, there is definitely still a lope. In fact, I don't like a really lopey idle so mine's set to 1000 rpm even with the 114 LSA.

As a follow up to the XE Cam....
What is a good valve train combo to go along with it?

in my car with stock TC and 3.73 and pcmforless tuning, cruised along at 60mph at 2300rpm's and felt like stock, no cam surge and good power. but i have head work. that could make a difference.

With 3.73s, an M6 and a 224/230/114 I have no trouble cruising in 6th at 50 mph (~1600 rpm) without surge. Not stock tuning though.

I don't have any surges either, what I do experience is a little "bucking", if that is what is called, at low rpms.
I have to go down a gear or two to aleviate the situation.
In my experience this cam is not happy at low rpms.
It likes to be kept above 1500 or 2000.
