Wrong Tstat in my car, question need awsnered

Im looking at shoebox's page about cooling and such (my car is running really hot so im trying to figure out why) I just put a 160* tstat in. but i see its not like the stock one. i was told this is ok.. upon seeing this http://csce.uark.edu/~jgbertr/rb/tstat.jpg i have the one thats got the big red cross through it (figures) What difference does it make, what does or does not the cooling system do with this type of tstat.. And will that be part of the reason its running so hot?

That's probably it. You should not use a SBC thermostat on an LT1. If you bought the 160 t-stat from Autozone, that isn't the right one.

Because the SBC thermostat does not have the extended portion, it does not seal off the orifice below the thermostat. What that does (when you don't have the long thermostat) is allow some of the coolant that is coming from the engine to mix with the coolant coming from the radiator (instead of each bypassing each other and going where it is supposed to). Your system will still work, but not be as efficient as it should. Some people claim it works ok for them. I would assume they live in a cooler climate. Better to have the right thermostat in there, so it works like it is supposed to.

3/4 of the way down is around 140-160 degrees. Seems fine to me. my car is like that too with my t stat. I think it might stuck open all the time so on the highway it run cooler than 160. It cools down even quicker when I start moving compared to the stock t-stat so I'm not complaining.

Recheck that you have no air in the system.

It really depends on the accuracy of the gauge and both temp sensors. The only way to get a better idea of what is happening is to use a scanner to see what the pcm sees.

u need to drain ur other line by the elbow..and check your guage thingy all theway to the left of the car it says COOLANT ONLY!! and be sure to fill up the radiator one too...and when you fill it up be sure you have the car runing and mix half with water...but the other one to the LEFT you need to check that and be sure its ok!! cause if it is low you will run HOT!! plus without bleeding the other coolant line it will run hot quick..it happen to me cause i didnt think i had to bleed the one by the elbow..but you have too...good luck!!

o and you need to have the car running while you drain the lines...when you start to see coolant come out that means it clear!!
