wrong balancer or what
wrong balancer or what
i've a 95 z and i'm not sure what's up with this. the crank pulley is out about half the belt width towards the front of the car(only half of the belt is riding on the pulley). it's been like this for god only knows how long. the car was bought by my girlfriend's parents about 3 years ago and i bought it from them about 1 year ago for a toy but she wanted to drive is instead, well i have it now and i am going over some maint. stuff and finding all sorts of things wrong. this situation started with and oil leak from the front main seal. got all the stuff to change it and noticed this. on top of all this i couldn't get the stupid hub off. so i gave up for the day.
any ideas? thanks.

Are you sure the hub is all the way on the crank? There is a shorter crank hub, but that was used on the 96/97 models to make room for the crank position reluctor. There may also be different lengths for the Corvette and Caprice engines, depending on the front accessory bracket.
The harmonic damper bolts on-to the hub, could the damper be reversed and bolted to the hub backwards (back-side forward). Which would place the microgroove pulley out of alignment with the belt and other accessories?
I’m using an aftermarket SFI damper and hub, I believe you can reverse the aftermarket damper on the hub. But, I’m not sure about the OEM damper and hub. Something to check.

I started thinking more about the possibility of installing the OEM damper on the hub backwards. So, I was out in my shop checking this out with an OEM damper and hub.
The damper “will” fit on the hub backwards and that causes a ¼” forward offset (misalignment) of the microgroove pulley. However, with the keyed damper/hub bolt pattern, only two of the three bolts can be installed.
So, if you see only two of the three bolts installed in the damper, that would be an indication it is on backwards and causing your belt misalignment problem.

the damper is on correctly, i'm positive about that.
you might be on to something. i might try to find another hub known to be out of a camaro and compare the two.

I am going to second the notion that you probably have a Caprice hub on there. I have been rebuilding a motor from a Caprice (for way to long, but someday I will finish). As I started to put the accesory bracket back on the front of the motor, I found that the hub is about 1/2 inch too short...Apparently I have an F-body rather than B-body hub.
If I can find the invoice I bought the new hub on, I will post the GM P/N for it. Any body know of a good source for B-Body LT1 part numbers?
