Worth replacing 110K mi Opti since it's already off?

Subject pretty much says it...I'd HATE to have to tear this bitch down in another 2000 miles to replace the Optispark. As far as I know it's original. Engine's out for a rebuild.

If I were to replace it, not sure if I'd be better off getting one off Jason Cromer, brand new (Forget what the going price is?), or a used one with maybe a few thousand miles out of the parts forum...I just don't see the sense of sticking this one back in there...

Thanks!
Dave

I wouldn't even mess around with a used opti. And yes since you have the opti off I would replace it. I'm sure you guys are gonna think this is crazy but my opti lasted fot 159,000 miles. It just recently went. But thats not the case most of the time. I got mine from Jason and everything worked out very nicely. In fact I outwitted the GM dealership and got my wires, opti, timing chain and water pump replaced for $540. Don't count on that ever happening. You're the guy that spun a bearing recently right? How's it coming along and what did you end up doing to the car?

For all the money you are spending, get a new one from Jason. When you fire up that new engine, you don't want to have to worry about "what-if this or that is not working right?".

OK a new opti it is.

Yep you are correct in that I spun a bearing. I kinda went a little wilder than I expected on this rebuild, here's what I'm going to do:

http://paradox.shacknet.nu/dave88lx/...uildsheet1.jpg

Crankshaft ~ 9-350-3750-6000-L ~ Scat 9000 Cast 3.75" stroke
Rods ~ 2-ICR6000 ~ Scat 6" 4340 I-Beams
Pistons ~ 138103 ~ SRP Forged 16cc Inverted Dome

Rotating assy is here now, build should start this week

Open up your old opti, and you'll have your answer. The rotor an contacts will be worn, plus the bearing is probably shot.

The opti is really a 100k tune up item, buy a new one from Jason or Dal. Make sure you get it lined up right, make sure you get the plug wires on the right posts, and dont forget to plug in the wiring harnes on the upper passenger side.

A new water pump is a good idea, given the miles and the new opti.

I like my chances with a new one out of the box vs. one bought used from someone.
