Worth it converting to vented opti?

My opti crapped out.

I can get a used vented one(1000miles) for $75, is it worth converting and what exactly is need to do so?

Jim Pace pontiac is down the road from me, will their conversion part list work to convert my 94 to vented? http://www.paceparts.com/product.asp...1=271&3=209456

Wiring Harness - $90
Vacuum Harness - $15
Timing Cover - $85
Dowel Pin - $3
Total ---- $193 + Opti = $270

Or should I just put up $390 and get a nonvented 94 one and save the trouble now? Or a $299 unit from Cromer?

First off, check eBay for some timing covers. You can get one for probably $50. Wiring harness, also looked for a used one (a lot cheaper).

As far as doing the swap, you'd probably want to take out the cam to swap pins. Now do you think it's really worth it?

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the camshaft to change pins?

To get the dowel pin out of mine, I put the pin in a vise and pulled/twisted it out.

Some say take it to a shop to do it.

Not sure how easy it would be while in an engine.

How difficult is it to remove the camshaft and replace it? I mean hell, I should just get a CC306, lol.

You'd have to remove intake, rockers, pushrods, lifters, and oil pump shaft (cam retainer plate, also).

Don't forget the hole in the end of the cam where the opti locates has to be enlarged if you have a '94 cam. http://para.noid.org/~muttvette/opti.html

Let me ask this...should I do the water pump while I've got it off, just to be safe?

How many miles do you have on that waterpump? If it's 30k - 40k I would replace it, since you have to remove it anyways to get to the opti.
I just put my 3rd waterpump on my car @ 113k, next time i'm going with an electrical one though.

Good luck with that.

Its got 37k on it. So I guess I'll change it out too. What are the pro's and con's of electric vs. stocker? What brand electric is the best? And what else do I need? Wiring harness? I am going to drive to Summit today and get them.

For the electric you'll have to do a lot of wiring, not hard though. It just frees up the timing chain a little. Electric will outflow a gear driven one at idle, but not in the upper RPMs. You'll have to grind out some "ears" on the housing for the elec. waterpump. You can also bleed the system with the car off.

I'm not sure if you want my help, my car doesn't even run right. BTW, I'm using CSI - - I think more people tend to choose it.

I'll take anyone's help. I only have one other guy to help me and he's an electronic tech at my University. Neither of us have changed and opti or waterpump. The other LT1 guys wont help out since the last person they helped almost sued them cause he didnt like the fitment of his headers. So its just me and Bill.

I have read the CSI requires some grinding but the Meizerine doesnt. How long do you think a electronic pump would last on a April to October daily driver?

Whats this I hear that the electronic plugs the peep hole or something? Is it safer with an electronic it either goes?

I am getting the Opti from Jason Cromer or Dal from Akron($300), and either the Electric or Stock water pump($150). I like the fact that the stock lasts a long time, but the power advantages of the electronic is a plus.
