Wont start after a hard rain.

My 95 Z28 wont start after a hard rain, just cranks and cranks but wont fire at all until it drys out. I replaced the coil the last time it did this but it didnt fix it. It runs great any other time with no problems. I replaced the opti about 130,000 miles ago, now the car has 220,000 miles on it.
Any ideas?

Re: Wont start after a hard rain.

I had this problem with my old z28, and wires were just getting wet... unfortunately, I sold it before I ever got it fixed, since it didn't rain hard very often.

Try looking for any exposed wires that could be getting rained on, and covering them/replacing them. Water might be getting into the distributor, as well.

replaced the opti 130k ago.....wow, how long ago was that in units of time? I don't have much info to offer, just as everyone else will say - check for any exposed wires, play around with it, avoid all puddles (potholes are tricky), etc. etc...

Re: Wont start after a hard rain.

Is your air filter getting wet somehow? I had a 4th gen cai on mine but when I first put it on, it was exposed to rain. The vented opti would suck in a bit of moisture and then cut off. A couple days later and it would be fine.

I am guessing you are getting water in the opti just like I was, although maybe a different way.

The air filter is a K&N hanging below the front bumper, But I dont even have to drive it to do this. It can be sitting in the driveway when it starts to rain and if it rains enough it wont start.
I replaced the opti about 6 years ago, I also put new plug wires on at that time. New spark plugs and coil a couple of months ago.

I am guessing that the high humidity finds itself inside the opti and is causing your problems.

ihad this problem with my caprice, it turned out to be one of the wires on the harness going to the coil. Next time it wont start get a friend to shake all the wires around and see if u can get it to fire...

Well the stupid fake scoops are inserts that often leak water onto the engine.. that could be causing a problem..
