Won't run above 4500rpm

When my motor revs to 4500 under full throttle in any gear, it starts popping and pouring black smoke. I guess that means the distributor is going bad. Unless someone has had this scenario before.

By the way, it runs fine otherwise.

Kinda sounds like a weak opti, or a dying fuel pump. Check you fuel pressure, make sure it is above 40psi with the vacuum line disconnected.

How can it get too much fuel with a dying fuel pump? It blows out black smoke when it starts skipping indicating unburnt fuel.

Re: Won't run above 4500rpm

You can't. That's why I said make sure it is above 40 psi because if its below that, you have a problem. I guess I overlooked the black smoke part of your original post That makes me lean more towards an ignition system problem. I'd take a good look at your opti.

What can I do to check the coil wire exactly? I mean, it's there, so....

Re: Won't run above 4500rpm

Alright, I will give that a shot. Any chance that I can get away with just replacing the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires.

If your in there you may as well replace the whole opti.
