wondering if my heads/cam are stock

i am the 3rd owner of this 95 z and i am not sure if any work was done to this motor. i recently changed the valve cover gaskets and notice some numbers written in black marker on the inside of the heads. my friend who has had a couple of serious hp mustangs drove the car last night and said there is no way that this motor is stock. any way to tell other than ripping the engine apart? the numbers on the heads were 33 on the drivers side and 12 on the other.

Does it have aftermarket rockers? I dont think the stocker rockers can handle much more than the stock cam. What obvious mods are on the car, exhaust, cai ect...

You can always buy or borrow a dial indicator and see what the lift is and compare it to stock specs.

Most guys will do a rocker upgrade with or before a cam upgrade, but not always

Not normal to see on the heads. It is possible though that they could have been at a shop for something more commen like a head gasket(warped head) or something like that.

no, there isn't usually writing on heads at all, ported or stock.

take it to the track.. stick it on a dyno.. or use a dial indicator as mentioned to take a look at the lift info.

Re: wondering if my heads/cam are stock

Track and dyno numbers are a great way to find out.
The TQ curve will be a big indicator as to what may have been done.
If the dyno has an Air/Fuel monitor, you can usually get an idea of weither or not it's been tuned.

Thoe 4.10s will make the car accelerate much quicker, and from your description it has some of the basic bolt-ons.
That's a great position to start from

If you can, post a video or sound file of the car at idle and revving.
That may help identify a stock cam VS a non-stock cam.
Pictures of the heads and the marking may help as well.

It's possible that someone put a bigger cam or ported heads in there,
but I wold have expected them to use aftermarket rockers as well.

You'll either need to film it with a digital camera/camcorder and download using the
memory card or USB cable. Or use a RCA/USB adapter and software to do it.

Then upload (or have someone upload for you) to photobucket (or
any other online storage). If you can get it to your PC, I can help you get it posted.

If that doesn't make sense, don't worry about it.
It's not really worth having you blow a bunch of money on adapters and software if
you don't have them already. A sound clip (.wav) would work
great too if you have some way of recording that digitally.

If there is marker written on the heads, it is possible they were obtained from a junk yard at some point... maybe after overheating a set or something. Junk yards write on everything.
