Winterizing, need some help.
Winterizing, need some help.
I got a 97 z28 and its going to have to be my daily driver in the winter. I need some tips from you guys because the winter is coming fast. Give any hints because Im sure this will be useful to many people soon.
I have the All-Weather BFG G force tires (Well inflated, good threads) so i think those would be a good place to start. Ill have all my fluids, filters, belts, and brakes changed by then so that would be good. Should I switch to a different type of oil, and if so, What kind (Im not going to run synthetic because I have a lot of miles)?
My heat works ok but i have some air leaks in my door panel and around one of my windows(Im workin on adjusting that).
My biggest concern is traction issues. Is there anything I can do to keep my rear end in my lane and keep it planted. Whenever it rains, it always seems to wander around on me when i turn and accelerate. I think i am going to put about 100 lbs worth of road salt in my trunk so that i get some more downforce and i can use it if need be.
Anything i should do one last time to the paint, bottom, or rims to keep the salt from eating them out and the water from rusting them?
I am going to get get some jumper cables as well to have.
Anything else i should try?

Re: Winterizing, need some help.
Having lived in Maine for 14 years prior to moving out to Tucson, I believe I can speak with some authority. I know you think that your tires are good for the winter, but I would still recommend a good set of snow tires all around. All weather tires just don't work nearly as well in snow as a good set of snow tires. A set of snow tires will make a big difference in your winter driving. Put them on in mid-November and take them off in late March. Snow tires use a rubber compound formulated for traction in cold weather and wear much faster in warm weather so don't forget to change back to your all weathers in the spring. If you can find a second set of rims to mount the snows tires it would simplify your tire swap and keep your current wheels from being exposed to the salt.
Use Sand in the back instead of salt as it can be used to provide better traction if you get stuck.

Re: Winterizing, need some help.
well man im in the same boat you are i live in north central indiana and all i can say is if you can scrape a few hundred together to get a winter beater do it the Z is gonna be unweildy in the snow i had a 94 3.4L camaro last winter and i hated driving so much. Ya know thos huge "ice bergs" that form behind the wheels in the snow well those when they fall off of other carsthey end up smaking against the bottom of your ride and one actually cracked my oil pan that was already in bad shap but that pushed it over the edge. Right now all i have is my 94Z and im lookin for a cheap car or truck that i can drive through the winter. So thats my advice find a cheap POS so you dont wreck your nice Z
