Windage

I think I might have a windage issue with my new H/C 383, which is a bit frustrating since I put it together with all the parts that I needed to prevent this. When I'm at anything over 1/2 throttle, passing through 5000 RPMs, the oil pressure gauge indicates a drop from about 60psi to around 35psi. If I shift or back off the throttle, it recovers to 60psi immediately. If I creep up on the higher revs, pressure will stay up at 60psi. It only drops if I slam the throttle. I'm running a Canton 7qt pan. Does this sound like a windage issue? Any suggestions for remedying it?

Are you sure about the 7 qt capacity of the pan? I'm using a Canton 242-T which is for a system capacity of 6 qts (fill the filter, then put the rest of the 6 qts in the pan). I think I remember others on this board having a loss of oil pressure at high RPM caused by overfilling.

Try running 5 quarts including the filter if you are not already.

Thanks guys. That's what I have gathered from a little research. This thread was most helpful. I'm going to drain the oil out tonight and refill with 5 quarts.

I'll post a solution here for future reference. The oil level was indeed too high. For some reason I had it in my head that this pan had a 7 quart capacity. Doh! Drained and filled to 5.5 quarts and I have a solid 60 psi at WOT throughout the RPM range.

I too thought my pan was 7 quarts. Same issues, same solution, same results.

Great success!

I like that signature quote about your car. I'd say the same about mine.

Is that the most decisive indicator of windage? Are there others?

I was worried about that using my Moroso pan as well, but have not watched it that closely on a WOT run. I no longer have the stock windage tray and the one on the Moroso pan seemed pretty darn small.

I owe it to some milquetoast metrosexual couple that was walking behind my car in a parking lot. After I shut it of I heard one of the limp wristed dopes say "that is so loud, and it smells!" I lol'd.

Thank you for admitting your mistake, it will certainly help others. Forums would be much better off if more guys could man up and admit a mistake rather than blindly defend them.

No problem at all. Its part of the engineering process. I actually don't mind admitting that I made a mistake in these situations. It means I have a solution and it can be fixed. Much better than the alternative of not having a clue what's going on and never being able to address the issue.

The tray on the Canton pan is quite small as well, but it seems to work as long as you don't overwhelm it. Windage most often shows up at a higher RPM during a fast engine speed acceleration. Its the nature of what it is. The higher the RPM, the more times the crank is striking the oil in the pan on a per second basis. When it does that enough in a given period of time, the oil aerates and the pump sucks an oil and air mixture. Since air is compressible, the pressure across the system drops as compared to an oil only mixture.
