Will power steering pumps work in either direction?

I have to fabricate a serpentine belt system for my motor because the stock positioning of components won't work in the chassis. I have several power steering pumps to choose from and some drive off the inside of the belt (grooves in the pulley) and some work off the outside of the belt (smooth pulley, reverse rotation). All the pumps housings look identical with the pressure ports pointing in the same direction. My question is: are the pumps sensitive to direction of rotation? If they were, I would think the pressure outlet ports would be pointed in opposite directions.

From what I hear, they are rotation oriented. I wanted to do my own custom acces. on my motor and decided against it since the pump won't work the opposite direction.

I'm not 100% positive, but am pretty sure it won't work the other way.

Nope just went through this.

A LT1 pump is reverse rotation, there is a one way metering valve the comes into play as well.

I just recently made a custom setup as well, if you do a search it might still be up.

Alt low on the pass side and PS low on drivers side.

I used to belts, one 6 rib and one traditional v-belt. Was the easiest to do.

The pump I used was off of a new SSR since it is standard clockwise rotation and my buddy had it sitting around. Worked out nicely.

That is a nice setup. What is the v-belt pulley off of and how is it attached to the balancer?

Re: Will power steering pumps work in either direction?

The pulley is just a generic pulley that I machined the center so it is the same ID as the snout of the stock Hub that slides on the front of the crank.
By doing so I use it as an alignment so the pulley is centered with the stock setup by an alignment pin I made. Not really complicated at all.

It attaches using the same holes that the stock balancer bolts up to just use longer bolts with a spacers. Holes were already in the pulley that I bought you just have to open up one hole more since the stock LT1 is not a perfect triangle.

The pulley was from summit for like 25 bucks max.

Re: Will power steering pumps work in either direction?

Do you have the P/N for that v-belt pulley you used from Summit?

Can you clarify a bit how you aligned it with the crank?
Did you machine it to slip over the hub to center itself or did you align it with a separate tool/component?

Thanks!
