Will LT1 heads flow enough for a 396?

Don't look at it as you've GOT to have a set of AFR 220's or the like for your 396. The motor will run and make decent power on a set of stock ported heads. Run it like that until you have the cash for a properly ported set of AFR's, or Trick Flow depending on how those turn out.

AFR 220's + good porting = most likely about $4000. Kinda like the price of a nice 396 shortblock.

The cc 306 will seem SMALL in the 396. If you are wanting good power, get with Joe Overton or Bret Bauer about a cam.

If it was me, I would use the heads until you can get some AFR 210/220's. I doubt if AFR 195's,Trick Flows or Edelbrocks would be much better.

youre right, i didnt word that correctly.........i just mean that with those heads on that motor.........the 306 cam is not going to reach peak potential.

a custom cam will get him more power, all else being equal.

adding bigger heads will get more power with either cam, but again, even more with the custom cam.

Agreed. A set of AFR 220s and a better cam like this one from Combination would really haul ***!

TN-236XH 236/244 duration, .608"/.613", 112lsa

Personally, I think the Comp Extreme cams are light years ahead of the standard CC305,CC306 etc. In addition to area under the curve, the CC306 falls short in comparison on intake duration as well, IMO.

I have a good freind who was racing cars when I wasnt even a gleam in my daddies eye. (50s) Anyway he said that to deal with the crappy head flow of the early SBCs they would add more cam. He calls a big cam a bandaid for poor flowing heads.

It is a band-aid. It gives the motor a narrow power band and is often slower than a car with the correct cam for the application.

I would not EVEN waste my time with s CC306, you really dont have enough head for a strong 383, less a 396. I would put a larger cam in it to try to compensate for the small heads. I would speculate in the low .250 @ .050 range on a 110 LSA to make it move some air. You most likely will have to shift around 6000 RPM cuz those heads will start wheezing for air around there, right cam may push it higher. Get a custom grind.

I really , really appricate all the coments and thoughts, keep the coming if you have more.

But like some of you said, i know i will not have the best combination by using the stock heads and the 306 cam but for me with a very tight budget i can only do one thing at a time, and that why im doing the 396 short block because it needs a rebuild if my current motor was not hurt i would invest in a set of AFR's for my current motor but there is no doubt i have a problem with my 355 and thats why im doing a 396.

Im thinking of right now of letting Lloyd look at them one more time and see if he can get any more flow out of the stock LT1's and upgrade on the springs and order a custom grind Hyd Roller. And when i get some tax money, bonus i will invest in a set of 210 AFR's CNC ported, by the way just got of the phone with AFR in Cali a set of 210's 70% CNC will cost me complete 2050$ not to bad but it will take 6 to 8 weeks . But i will run the LT1 heads and go to a bigger cam and see what happens.

Yes their CNC job leaves alot to be desired. I wasnt too bright and bolted my AFRs on as they came to me, now after seeing some things they need at the least a cleanup from the cnc and valvejob.

Take a look at this page, it shows how to do little things to AFRs to get them to wake up.
