Will Crane 99893 springs fit in the stock spring seats?? Need to know...

Thunder Racing says on their webpage that these springs will not fit in the stock seats, while others on this forum say that they will. Is anyone using these springs in stock seats? I'll be using the Comp 4770-16 spring seats and the 740-16 retainers.

Also, anyone have any suggestions for valve locks?

I appreciate your responses.

I'm using those springs on my stk. heads so I would have to say they will fit in the stk. spring seat location on the heads.

Are you using the kit? If you are it will come with retainers and valve locks. If you're not using the kit the locks and retainers must be compatible, either 7 or 10 degree valve locks. I would go with 10 degree valvelocks.

My springs are sitting on comp spring seats instead of those shims that come in the kit.

Thanks for the reply!

I only bought the 99893 springs since the seats and retainers that come with the 10308 kit apparently suck. I have since purchased the 4770-16 seats and the 740-16 titanium retainers and locks.

I had two tech guys at Thunder Racing arguing with me that the 99893s won't fit in the stock pockets, but another member (jonaddis84) said he did the same on a friends car. I'm trying to find the biggest spring that will fit in the stock pockets, and hopefully these work. Then I'll be giving TR a call soon after!

What cam are you running?

Thanks for the help! Anyone else?

AAHHMMM, the kit doesn't suck that's what I'm using on my car now with a stk. cam. The only thing I wouldn't use from the kit are the shims that supposedly take the place of spring seats. I didn't like that idea that's why I'm using them with comp seats.

You mentioned your heads are stk. so that's basically like mine. AFA retainers and stuff you probably don't have much of a choice here. I originally wanted to just buy the springs (part # for just the springs would be 99893) and use a titaninum retainer but due to the shorter length of the valve stems over afkt. valve stems there was no choice but to use the kit (which has the springs, steel retainers, and locks). The explaination for this is HERE:

Read the whole thread and my explaination about this is in there somewhere.

Crane 99893 springs fit stock LT1 heads, the included alum head shims even fit fine, so not sure why Thunder Racing states they do not fit. Crane who manufactures these springs states otherwise.

I had many people telling me different answers regarding those springs...I ended up getting the EX-612s http://www.cmotorsports.com/93-97-fb...ine-valvetrain

Then fit right on and I have had no issues with them.

I have the 10308 spring set (the full 99893 kit with shims, retainers and locks) and just got off the phone with Crane. The guy on the tech line told me that these springs will NOT fit without machining the head around the valve seal. He said that they will cut the seal if you don't machine around there...

I'm trying to get a definite answer on this because I'd like to install the springs and 1.6 rockers without pulling the heads from the car.

I've run these springs on two different sets of stock castings without issue. I use the 4770-16 seats to locate the spring. I used the K-line valve stem seals and there isn't any clearance issues. The locator keeps the spring from walking off of the spring seat.

I am also using the 10308-1 kit. No problems at all. I'm even using the shims. I'm running the CC XE224/230 cam with Crane 1.6SA rr's. Everything went together fine no clearence issuses at all. No machining at all. I also called Crane when I bought these ( just to be sure ) and they told me no problem on stock heads ( meaning no machining required ) . IMO these are a top quality double spring that works great. Get em put on so u can have some fun!!! FYI By the way I have heard that the L98 seats fit these springs perfectly.

I just installed one of the springs on the stock heads tongiht with no machining. I used the shim included in the kit to sit the spring on and all went fine. Should have the rest of them on the car tomorrow.
