Will a better damper help stock shortblock durability?

I understand that the front of the LT1 is internally balanced, and the 'harmonic balancer' is actually a torsional damper. Will upgrading that component reduce crankshaft forces or otherwise help things hold together longer or at higher RPMs?

Actually a stock LT1 is externally balanced via the flexplate or flywheel as far as i know?

You are right about the flywheel/flexplate. I think the front is internally balanced, and the rear is externally balanced. That's why the balancer/hub has no offset weighting, but the flywheel does. Maybe it's more accurate to say the engine is externally balanced, but only at the rear?

If you build a 355 and use a stock crank, lighter rods and pistons and internal balance it and run a good balancer then it will be indistructable.

The balancer if it kills the harmonics in the frequencies you run in better than the stock one it will help the motor live longer.

Yes the engine is only externally balanced at the rear.
