Will any small block double roller work?
Will any small block double roller work?
I'm switching over to a true double roller timing chain setup, I know I need to get the vented opti, timing cover, wiring harness, electric water pump, and longer dowel pin in the cam. With these changes will any standard small block chevy timing chain work or does it still take a specific part number?
Re: Will any small block double roller work?
Sorry to intrude but can someone describe why all of that is needed? I have a unvented 93 and need to go double roller but am just now trying to figure out what I need to get.....

Re: Will any small block double roller work?
The non vented opti is turned by a little driveshaft that fits into some plines in the cam gear, there is no true double roller timing set that has this. The later model vented optisparks are driven by the dowel pin in the cam which will work with the roller timing sets, you have to go to the electric water pump because the roller timing sets don't have the teeth to drive the water pump gear either.
Re: Will any small block double roller work?
Is this chain a OE replacement for the stock gears? (If so has it proven to hold up better than the stocker?)
Man that all sounded semi-doable but the electric water pump is probably pretty pricey to top it all off with.
I really am looking for the most reliable Cam Chain setup, my 10k or less stocker is REALLY stretched out....

Re: Will any small block double roller work?
You must use a GM timing chain be it stock or LT4 or LT4 ED because of the drive gear used to spin the stock mechanical waterpump.
If you decide to go with an electric pump then you have several choices of TCs to use. I went with the Cloyes part# 3145 from Jegs.. its about the strongest chain out there from what Ive heard. There are others that will work as well but like someone else said they all pretty much require clearancing on the inside of the TC cover or it will rub the chain.

Re: Will any small block double roller work?
Thanks man.
Also I have been told the RollMaster Timing Chain Set is pretty much superior, and cost friendly. The gears look to be a good grade of steel, possibly billet. However, I also heard it can be purchased with a "normal" chain or the "much better" German or Austrian chain??? If this is true, where can I get the RollMaster with the better chain. I really like the 9 Keyways on the roll master crank gear as well
