RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
RPMs drop to idle at 45mph right away as soon as I let off the gas??
Doesn't matter if I'm doing 30mph or 60mph. As soon as I take my foot off the gas the RPMs drop down to 900 rpm almost right away.
What could be causing this? Vacuum leak? Header leak?

Re: RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
In gear say, selector in 3rd, and you let off to allow engine braking it just drops to idle. Right?
700r4. If so you might have just cashed out your one way low roller clutches.
th350 or 400.could just be your stall.
Mine would drop to idle at any speed in 1st 2nd or 3rd ( even with the converter locked )
Just an insight

That sounds about right.
There is a clattering when I shut off the car. Converter?
Re: RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
Well as far as the clatter, not too sure.
But when you nuke any clutches in the tranny, it is dead. Time for a total rebuild. Check your fluid, should be burnt, also driving around in d will help. But its time for that built tranny you've always dreamed of
.
the best way to check is put it in manual 1st and just take past your converters stall speed and then let off the gas. If it pulls the car down till it hits the converter then that might not be your prob. But if it falls right to idle like pushing in a clutch
Good luck

Re: RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
Its a 3200 stall. So if I rev to 4000 and it pulls it down to 3200 its the converter and if it falls right to idle from 4000rpm its the clutches?
Fluid doesn't look burnt.

Re: RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
yes that is a good place to start. Maybe go as high as you feel comfertable.
If the motor pulls the car down (engine breaking) then the trans may still be ok. But not for long with a broken converter.
I have never broken a converter, just transmissions 4 of them
,so I am not too sure what happens when they let go.

Re: RPMs drop to idle at any speed??
Just came back from TWO tranny places. They say the tranny is fine. The car didn't clatter when I shut it off both times...figures.
Anyways, could this be a bad IAC motor? Isn't the IAC supposed to keep the idle up?
If the converter came loose, could this be the cause?
