Will a 225/60/16 tire throw my speedo off?

Well winter is aproaching I'm getting ready to take my Z06 rims off. My stock 5-spokes will go on with their crappy continental tires that aren't worth a sh*t . They don't get any traction at all. I would get better traction with my Z06 rims but I don't want road salt to eat them up. So anyway with the additional horsepower from my cam that I just put in I decided I need to upgrade to a better winter tire so I can try and get some traction. After looking at tire rack I couldn't find any 235/55 series winter tires. So my question is will a 225/60 work? It will probably throw the speedo off but how much? Any info is appreciated. Thanks guys!

You would get better traction from a narrower tire...think about it. Higher ground pressure per sq. inch of tire=better traction. With tires that wide you will just skate around on the snow.

Oh yeah I know that. I've driven a camaro in the winter for the past 4 years. The last one with those 245/50 continentals I mentioned, which was no fun to say the least. During highschool I lived in the country and lets just say I didn't think I would make it home a few times. My car was a snow plow when the wind drifted the roads over . Getting up my driveway all I could do was stay on the gas and pray. Narrower is definitly better.

My main concern is will the 225/60 size throw the speedo off a great deal?

Yes, it will be off.

Calculated 225/60/16 diameter: 26.63"
Stock value: 25.65"

According to my calculations, it should show about 10% slower with the new tires. (about 10 MPH less at 100 MPH, 5 MPH less at 50 MPH)

I may be wrong on the second part though.

Go with a 225-55-16 snow tire, as there are tons of available choices in this size and it's only 0.4% off the original 245-50-16 size.

A 225-60-16 would be way off, 3.8% to be exact.

Check out this online tire size calculator to see:

I'm getting some 225-55-16 Semperit Sport Grip winter tires next week for my car, and will be mounting them on 1997 Camaro Z28 rims.

Ok thanks madwolf and patman. That info is greatly appreciated ! 5 Mph off at 50 is way to much. I'll look into some 225/55 like you patman. Thanks again.
