Wierd clattering @ 2500???

Im getting this wierd clattering sound right at 2400-2500 RPM. Its not there before and its not there after. It's hard to explain but if someone here has had it I think you know what I'm talkin about. Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Can you tell where it's coming from? I'm guessing exhaust -- loose pieces in cats or mufflers usually make weird clattering sounds when the engine hits the right rev range.

Test: get the car off the ground and get under it with a rubber mallet. Go along the entire exhaust route and thump the pipes (not too hard, but hard enough to make it shake). If you hear the sound, you found it.

Can you describe it more? I have something similar. Kinda sounds like slowly shaking rocks in a coffee can. Not exactly but thats the best I can describe it. Only from about 2300-2500 rpm and most noticeable in 4th gear. Very faint in 2nd and a lil more noticeable in 3rd. But if I hold it at the rpm range it will stay there. At full throttle its a no show. Kinda sounds like its coming from front of tranny clutch area. But I KNOW ITS NOT THE CLUTCH. Because it did it with the stocker and my street twin. No hijack intended here just seeing if someone else finally has the same problem as me-and maybe can get it fixed.

mfb, check your cats with the rubber mallet as I described above. They're pretty close to the clutch.

As in something rattling? I have checked this several times. Nothing seems loose. However this noise in my case did start very soon after i added the headers + y pipe and cat back.

I had a very similar sound, its especially loud when downshifting. Check your header bolts. The rear 2 on each side of mine weren't tight. Once tightened up you won't hear the sound anymore...it does occasionally return every 2-3 months, but a quick wrench job and you're good...I think 3/8 is the wrench size.
