Why is there so much play in the throttle?

just as it states, i have maybe 1.5" of travel in my throttle pedal before i get the gas moving....is there something that i can do to the throttle position sensor to make that right? can auto tap do something? or do i need to send my PCM back to brian for him to re-calibrate it?

thanks, oh...i kinda need some answers ASAP, thanks a bunch to all who help me out.

phil

Without knowing any more info, I would say it is in the throttle cable. You can prove this easily by having someone watch for movement at the throttle body while the pedal is being depressed.

ok, i do believe it is the throttle cable...how do i go about fixing this?

reason for me saying this is that if i go under the hood i can move the ABS or whatever the hell that thing is on the driver's side a good 1/4 rotation before it starts to move the throttle on the intake.

My pedal is the same way. So how do you tighten the cable?

Do you mean traction control? You kinda left that info off as well as what year your car is. Cable routing will be different if you have TC.

I don't have traction control so both procedures would be helpful

ok i figured it out. i hope i describe this well enough.

My car has TCS, so the throttle cable exists the rear of the TCS controller, makes a "U" turn around to the rear of the throttle body connection. About 6-8 inches to the rear of the throttle body is a connection where the throttle cable connects with the TCS TB cable. [don't know if those are the correct terms, not really caring about that right now] Where those two cables meet there is a plastic male-female connection with a black plastic "U" clip, albeit a box shaped "U." This plastic connection needs to be firmly secured against the ensuing cable connection because there are grooves on the "U" that match up to the grooves on the shroud around the TCS TB Cable. You will know if you have a firm connection because the plastic will have snapped in place, and the TB will move in conjunction with the TCS.

I hope this helps, forgot to take a picture of what I was talking about.

I have a 93 Z with loose throttle too. If I push the pedal all the way to the floor and have a buddy sitting under the hood, he can still move the throttle open another inch. I would guestiumate the throttle only opening up about 80-85% at WOT. I was thinking about triming a 1/2 or more off the pedal side of the cable and recrimping it. Is this a wise idea? I hate the pedal travel being SO close to the floor.

If the cable or its mounting points are not messed up, I don't see why that would not work. Just don't make it so short that you put a lot of strain on it when you have it at WOT. The cable may end up fatiguing and snap. Chances are, it's time for a new cable, anyway.

Have you checked the connection behind the throttle body? Check that to see if there is any play in that wire, if you can move it then what you need to do is re-seat that black plastic "clip."
