Why NGK TR55's...Whats so special?

I went to get some plugs for my car and looked at the TR55's. Why do so many people use them? They look like some cheapie import brand plug.

They are iridium plugs.
Good stuff.
They come standard on most sportbikes (my 929) and I have a set on my Camaro and brother does too.

treyZ28 - I dont know if they are copper or not. They are just a standard 0.050 gap plug as far as I can tell. I know thunder racing sells them.

droptop1 - Why did they suck? That is what I grabbed.

Platinum lasts longer, but copper is a better conductor. TR55's are copper. I think NGK Iridiums are platinum.

Mikey97Z - So in theory I should get a better spark from the copper TR55'sw, but they wont last near as long?? Which do you think I should get for an internally stock motor?

well they wore out way faster than copper plugs. it took them like 5000 miles and they went bye bye, engine started to misfire and stuff. then i checked the usual wire plugs and found my problem. the plugs. i dont know if i just got defective ones or what. but i will never bye them again. i also here the ac delco plugs are pretty good also though.

The TR55's come in the regular Copper, a platinum and then an Irodium one also.

I have heard that the platinum plugs where bad with Nitrous especially since they do not cool off as fast as the regular copper plugs which can cause them to detonate the A/F mixture before they are supposed to.

I am not sure what the advantage would be with the Iroduim ones, but the F*rd Lightning guys seem to really like the Iroduim Plugs.

I work at NAPA part time and I got bored today and looked them all up

What is the approximate normal lifespan of the copper plugs then?

I use Autolites 106's, I change them once a year at least.
I do check the plug gaps during the course of the year just to make sure that are still good.

Since I started using them I change them once a year or about 5000 miles. I'm sure they last a lot longer than that but they are pretty cheap and I like to have a fresh set of plugs in there

I hate NGK's...they are a horrible plug in my opinion. I used them and fouled them out after only 200 miles of NORMAL driving. My dad had some in his vette and the car runs like ****. A guy from my car club has used them two other times (94 formula) and his nickname for them is NGKrap...I would just use stock AC Delco's unless you are using forced induction/nitrous.

Just to clear up some confustion from one of the first posts, Iridium plugs are made from Iridium, not platinum.

The main benefit of Iridium plugs is longevity, they last longer than even platinums. Starting to come as standard OEM equipment on some imports now, but they are not cheap. If you are changing plugs regularly (one a year) then there's no need for anything more than a standard copper plug.

If you want to put one set in and leave them for years, consider platinum or iridium.
