why is my car idleing too high??
OMG! steelheart, after replying to this post it happened to me too! Today I floored it from a stoplight and shifted at 6K through first, second and third and got up to 80 then eased up. At the next stop my car was idling at 2200 rpm! I tried tapping the gas, but it the idle would not drop!
So I parked it. Waited a minute, and started it back up. It was idling at about 1900. So I shut it off and waited, then started it again. It idled at 1600. As of now, it's down to about 1300 but it's not dropping any further. I tried the "reset the IAC trick" (turn key to on, hold the gas pedal and start the car) which didn't help.
I'm going to log some data tomorrow and see what the IAC counts are. I might pull the intake this weekend, if I can find new gaskets first.

ill be replacing my IAC tomorrow or sunday to see what happens, im thinking my iac is bad, or clogged up, my car is a 96 ss with only 17,000 miles and it doesnt get driven much so maybe the iac decided to get stuck on me or something, ill post when i fix it...good luck

You do know that your IAC valve goes down in steps when you are coming to a stop right? Automatics have it even worse, I took screen shots of the IAC offset vs MPH for the automatic and manual trans. As you can see the manual trans will reach its idle rpm after coming to a stop sooner than an automatic car. These steps are to preserve vacuum for braking and accesorries while coming to a stop.

either pull the battery wire for 30 seconds or so, or pull the fuse marked ECM in the fuse box for a few seconds. You're car will probably stumble when you first start it because it is reset to factory settings.
i finally replaced the IAC today, so far so good, its not idleing high and it seems to be idleing down normally, so i guess time will tell, by the way..is there anyway to tell if the old one was not working properley, it was pretty dirty i know that... thanks
