Why does my shifting act like this?
Ever since I've owned this car (95 Z28 M6) I've always noticed the shifting was a little strange. The current shifter is a Pro 5.0 w/ an LS short stick.
The shifting is fairly notchy/hard going into 3rd. Not so hard that I can't shift.. I just notice that it's harder than most gears. Going around turns.. shifting into 2nd sounds like I'm getting a metal-metal contact or something. Some days the shifting is nice and smooth. Others are notchy.
I replaced the clutch about 1,500 miles ago. The first 500 break-in miles were beautiful. The clutch shifted soooooo smooth and quick. The engagement point was damn near the floor. The hydraulics are about 5k miles old. I replaced them.
So far.. the intake oil leak fix (did this before new clutch) and new hydraulics helped somewhat. They didn't solve my problem though.
It doesn't clunk or sound like it's going bad on me.. just that.. one day the shifting is good.. another it is not so good. Heat/cold doesn't matter. I've had it shift both bad and good on me in the freezing morning. Gears 4, 5, 6, and R are perfect.. I have no complaints about them. It's just gears 2 and 3 that will do this to me. I can't see it being a tranny syncro.. because the problem went away with a new clutch.. then came back after the clutch break-in period (~600 miles).
Any ideas as to why my tranny acts so tempermental?

Clutch might not be disengaging all the way, are you sure the hydrolics where bleed properly. It shouldn't be engaging so far down, on my car with the stock clutch it would disengage right at the top of pedal travel, with the spec stage 3 it's maybe a half inch lower
First thing I would say is the skip shift soleniod is prolly the cause... it may be sticking out too far. But if its not that might be something else.
If its doing it only in some gears and not all you can 99.99% of the time rule out the clutch, because if the clutch doesnt engage ALL the gears will act poorly.
If its doing it in partial gears 1-4 or just 5-6 I might be the shift linkage.
However, the most common thing that goes bad in a fully syncronized trans is the brass blocking ring. There is one for each gear, 1-6. This is what eliminated double clutching when downshifting back in the day.
If you try downshifting and its worse than some of the other gears, chances are its a brass blocking ring. After all, they are brass. if you powershift the hell out of your trans you may have broken one. 2nd gear is the most common because you usually downshift into 2nd more than any other gear. Going around turns etc.
if you check shoebox's site he has the t56 manual on site to download if you decide to tackle it yourself (for me it doesnt seem hard because ive done many a trans)
Also, I would check your shifter and the cup and ball socket. Ive seen the cup break and the shifter will actually go through the bottom and shift poorly and mesh two gears at once sometimes.
Good luck.
