There were very few 350s in the past that came with 12:1 compression from the factory, hmm let me think....none!!! The 67-69 302 Zs had 11:1 , the 327s in the 63-67 vettes had 10:1 through 11:1, and the screaming 283s in the early 60s still never topped 11:1, the early LT1 in 69 and 70 only had 11:1.
The main contributors to the sound of a car are the firing order, apipe size , restriction and or muffler type.

i used an edelbrock headers, off road pipe, a 3" electric cut-out and a super turbo dynomax muffler. my car sounded like a bad *** v8 car. i get lots of compliment by other people.
btw i'm in orange county, LA california..

Sorry to disagree with most of you but I didn't see a mention of the most obvious reason Z28's don't sound as good. We don't have a true dual exhaust system. This is why a stang with headers can sound so excellent. I believe another source of the sound is the iron block. I've never heard an LS1 that sounded worth a crap
i have stock manifolds, 3" cut out, and flowmaster muffler and it sounds better than any other lt1 around town. as far as ricers go i have yet to see one turn on like 50 alarms in the parking lot. just this morning i set off almost every alarm at the mall

Well i hate to bust all yah bubbles but noone can tell u what sounds nice and what sounds ****, its a matter of opinion... some people like flowmaser and some people like borla.... but look, no matter what... our cars will never ever sound rice and i hate it when someone tries to judge the sound of a catback brand over a soundclip on the net...
Come on now... You older guy's will have to agree with me,
The main reason the "old 350's" sounded the way the did is all because the mufflers were located closer to the engine. My old 67 RS had headers with the mufflers bolted on to the collectors, that was it. The closer the muffler is the the engine, the louder and deeper the sound will be. Of course I agree with someone else that said true dual's adds to the "better" sound. I would put two washers between the collectors and muffler to let the exahust (cam) really talk. Man was it sweet!!! Our LT1's are no different than the "old 350" 's they can be made to sound just as good. Get rid of the cat, run true duals, (and I wish we had room) put the muffers right after the headers!!!
