Who Are they Kidding?

The LT4 Conversion for the '96-97 LT1 from Summit claims, "The kit will give you a proven 425+ hp." Sure it comes with 1.6:1 RR's, better heads & intake manifold, hotter cam, and full set of gaskets.....but just these mods will boost hp 125 ponies? Has this been proven by GM since it's GM performance parts?
I thought the 383 stroker was a better mod than the LT4 conversion, and doesn't the 383 boost less than 100 extra ponies?
If this claim IS true, I may have found my next mod! Of course I'd most likely have to jump to 30lb injectors and a 58mm TB.

360 RWHP through an auto 20% drivetrain loss =432HP
I don't think just adding 33 cubic inches is going to give you that kind of gain.

I don't get it either. 140 hp increase over an LT1 from heads/intake manifold/hotcam? 90 hp increase over stock LT4 from the hotcam? But they also promise performance gains from the Tornado...
Re: Who Are they Kidding?
The 425+ HP claim is based on an engine dyno test of a bare LT1 engine, done by MORE Performance back in maybe 1997 or 98. It was documented in a couple of magazines at the time. As I recall, it was a bare engine, with no accessories or intake ducting.... so it is effectively "SAE gross" HP, not the "SAE Net" HP that the manufacturers use to rate the engines. As documented in the article (again, going from memory - it was so long ago), they used headers, larger than stock injectors, and a larger throttle body... and maybe a few other "bolt-ons". What they failed to indicate in the article and came out later was that they were tuning the engine on the engine dyno with a $3,000 aftermarket ECU, not a stock PCM.
So... will you see 425+ FLYWHEEL HP by simply installing the LT4 Conversion Kit? Not likley. Could you get close if you did everything they did? Maybe.
