Who has hammered their hub on and been fine afterwards???
I need some reassurance. Is there any way to check for damage before I crank the engine? Hammering that stupid thing on was my only hope so I went ahead and did it. I want to know what my chances are that I messed something up? I really hope that I did not, I'd like to check ASAP though to make sure. I can't have this happen right now especially after buying and installing all this top end stuff I just did. Screw the hub to hell.
You got lucky... I stripped the first bit of thread, then the last bit of thread. Then I helicoiled the hole and I did not want to risk messing up the helicoil or that hole and that crank would have been shot to hell. I just hope and pray that I did not mess up the thrust bearing. I tried not to hit it too hard, just repeated tapping hits to make it go on but I hammered it the whole way on. I think it may have been so hard because it was a brand new hub. Either way, I need to know the odds of messing something up to know what to expect. Will the engine immediately make bad sounds if I messed up the bearing... Is it possible to disalign the crank??? Although I don't know how exactly that could happen but anything is possible. Please let me know asap.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I used a rubber mallet. I was more concerned with damaging the threads than messing up a main bearing, that's why I hammered it on most of the way. It's fine but I only have 500 miles on it since the top end was put on. I wouldn't use a steel hammer, the shock to the crank is much less with a rubber mallet.

I used a brass hammer to "tap" it on.
I tried to get it on with the bolt, and managed to mangle a couple of threads on the crank.
if you didnt BEAT THE HELL out of it, I would think you wil be ok my friend.
BTW....seems like you and this hub are pretty well acquainted, bet you look forward to messing with it som more
