whirling and hesistation

I know this may be a generic question, but both these things started happening at almost the same time (within a couple of weeks) When I first start the car (when cold) there's a strange whirling noise (like a loud wind) coming from the alternator area. It's not "squeling" like a loose belt. It stops completely within about 10-15 seconds.
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but when the car has set overnight and I start it up to drive to work, it idles fine without any hesistation, and goes in reverse fine (it's an automatic) but when I put it in drive it hesitates very bad and this morning it actually stalled out when I applied the gas.
There 's no CES light going off or anything. Does anyone have any ideas??

The sound is hard to say......I have a high pitch "Whine" that last for about 15-20 seconds then it goes away. The hesitation/stalling is most likely something with the transmission & the sound maybe the torque converter. It might just need a service (filter, fluid, pan gasket) or a sensor/solenoid.....or it could be the start of an internal transmission problem. (I manage a trans shop in NJ) I'm not plugging my shop or franchise, but I recomend that you bring it to a QUAILIFIED tranny shop to have it checked out.....maybe bring it to the experts @ double A beep beep....you should know the rest! LOL
