Where can i get a long air filter? (yet another custom intake)
Where can i get a long air filter? (yet another custom intake)
I need about an 18" long preffered cylinder, if not an oval or rectangle, air filter. It needs to have around a 3" to 4" Inlet diameter and be from 4-7 inches in outer diameter.
This is what i plan to do. I plan on cutting the front bumper. It is a stock firebird bumper with the two holes in it. You know how there is the point between the two holes? Well i plan on cutting this section from hole to hole. This will give me about a 22"x6" area. I plan on making a metal 'box' to slide into this area making it one giant hole. This is where the large air filter will go. I will rivit it to the remaining bumper, putty over it then repaint it.
What do you all think? The only filter i found was a K&N 41-1400 which is $89 and i was kinda looking for something a little bit cheaper.

Where does the air go once it goes through the filter? How does it get to the engine?
I've been thinking about doing a "custom" air induction too. Heres my tentative plan....
ls1 lid in ls1 location above radiator...but instead of sucking air from underneath the car like the ls1(from the airdam) I was going to cut out the front bumper like you said and have ram air going from the bumper straight up to the ls1 air lid. sorta like the ftra ram air but coming from the cut out in the bumper instead. I'm pretty sure the windshield washer reservoir and bumper support would have to come out but that's no big deal. I haven't used the windshield wipers in 3 years and a lot of people take out the bumper support to save weight.
My main thing is that it has to look very clean and professional, but I have done a lot of fabrication and I am a perfectionist when it comes to that...if you get a chance check out the gauge pod I made for the radio bezel on the second page of the website in my sig. It still needs some touch up but you'll get the idea.
Let me know how it works out for you.

That sounds like a good idea if you can get the air from the bumper to be forcefed and stay straight into the bumper. Thos gauges lok awsome btw.
My air will run though some 3" PVC piping to the MAF. The more i think about it, the more i am thinking that i may not even build a box. I may just build it so it's all open and forces air into the radiator. Once i have the bumper off, the crash bar, the resivior i will decide how i am going to do it all.

It's not the hood. It's the fender and bumper. The PO hit a deer at 75mph and this intake is being done since i will have the entire front end off of my car while i fix it. So i am working on fixing it. It looks like i am going to have to bend the wheel well with a 4x4 block and floor jack, and maybe where the passenger headlight is on the frame. I threw it al together to pass inspection and have been to lazy to fix it lately.
