When Does Your Clutch Engage?

On my car the clutch doesn't engage until the last 1/8" (just an approximation). Is this normal? When should it catch? Could my clutch be going? Any ideas you have would be great.

What clutch are you using ?

Sounds like your clutch is going, it should be easy to tell. Does it slip? Will it still chirp second gear? Does it slip alot when you launch? (should smell really bad)

The car has 52K. The bolts that hold the slave cylinder were loose and the fluid level was a little low, could this be related?

Mine used to engage about 1" off the floor. But now its all the way out. Even with the new clutch in last night. Have you had your flywheel cut at all? I have had mine cut 2 times now, so I think thats why mine is all the way out. I hope atleast.

My clutch disengages up top (fairly new McLeod Street Twin). I have been in several cars where brand new clutchs are installed and the clutch disengages at the top.

Yep, mine engages all the way up top (probably an inch from the top or so) and it has ever since I got the new clutch installed. It has always released at the same point even with the stock clutch.

So maybe that's just the way my clutch is, and I shouldn't be worried?

The only way I would be worried is if the position of the release has changed, but if it has always been that way, I wouldn't worry about it until you hear/feel the clutch slip. Get as much abuse out of the stock clutch and then put it one that will grab!!

So, what is the consensus on where it's supposed to engage?

Mine seems to start grabbing about 1" off the floor. I think full engage is about midway. I just had my SLP clutch installed a couple of weeks ago. Sure does drive nice, but definitely changed the position of where it grabs and engages.
